Half-Life 3

Nope, this is outdated information. There will be life in the Half-Life universe after episode 3. It's just not clear in what form (more episodes vs. normal standalone game) or whether it will still be a continuation of Gordon's story (could be a prequel or from someone else's perspective).

Thanks for the update. I hope its not episodic seeing as how their current turnaround is.

Sorry to tell ya man, but someone's blowing smoke up your nether region. Up to this point there has been litterally nothing legit shown or indicated for Halflife3. Every single pic posted up to this point (including in this thread) can be attributed to some @55#073 getting his jollies at the expense of some poor gullible soul.

I'd rest assured though that when legit pics and video do arrive, it'll probably be someone here that does the leaking, and I'd wager it'll be a fair sight prettier than any of these "screen shots" shown off so far.

Even if none of these are legit, I hope they go back to H-L 1 and Black Mesa in the third installment. Lone guy on military base with monsters running amok, avoiding radioactive hazards and operating machine puzzles (DOOM) is my kind of thang. The first image on this thread is close to what I want. Walking around in a city with dilapidated buildings gets old fast.

I think any one thing gets old fast. The night time in Max Payne, the Jungle in Crysis...and the gloomy setting in HL-2. Most games struggle with variety.

Crysis did try with the Alien levels/carrier/flying but that was too short a part of the game. The whole beginning seemed like the same thing over and over. Saying that...if you can make it interactive enough (really great physics), then even an ugly boring environment can be a ton of fun. I mean look at garrysmod

I agree with CNC, but I don't demand variety of environments if there is variety of gameplay.

Painkiller excelled at environment variety b/c they ignored theme.

I couldn't stop playing the first few painkillers....ridiculously addictive. Not sure what happened in the recent ones, I can't even get through 5 mins of the demo without shutting it off.

Agreed, I never get tired of the original Doom and Doom 2. And Half-Life (first one) still has one of the best start segments of any game. Would really love to revist black mesa.

Valve has mentioned that they'll never go back to BM because it would be creative death if they did (or something along those lines). The closest you'll get is BM the mod which should be released sometime this year - and looks amazing, in my opinion.

Valve should never have done EP1 & EP2 then.

Yeah, I'm dying to play BMS.

Indeed. What hypocrisy. Going back to City 17 is much less of a creative death than going back to BM? BM can be just as big as City 17.

You don't even spend all that much time in City 17, even in the original game... Most of Ep. 1 is either underground or inside specific buildings. Much of Ep. 2 is underground or indoors as well.

The bits I enjoy the most of Eps. 1 and 2 are those that take place outdoors (not in the original game though; I never liked the boat and car sequences, nor ravenholm, nor the walk from the lighthouse to the nova prospekt facility...)

Same here, the outdoors levels were the best. Although I also liked the outdoor levels in HL2 itself. Ravenholm got kinda old quick... felt more like a physics demo level.

I found HL2 and its expansions decent and fun for a single play. But I think that they are overrated. HL1 was great because of how fresh it was at the time. But HL2 is so painfully linear-feeling. It feels like you are on rails. Ultra-controlled scripted experience deluxe. I do think the universe and the settings are fascinating, but the gameplay is so bleh. I wish Valve could create a hybrid of STALKER and Fallout 3 with their universe!

I actually think I might put the original Jedi Knight ahead of Half Life. I know, shocking huh! I think I can hear an angry mob coming to get me. ;)

If you really dig the creepy complex experience and in-game storytelling style of HL, be sure to check out Penumbra.
