Grabbed by the Ghoulies, anyone?

Just put things back on topic here... :)

I've played about 3 hours of Ghoulies so far (most of my time has been with Crimson Skies lately) and my opinion of the game hasn't really changed. There's a lot of Rare magic in this title and what makes the game much better for me is the unlockable mini-game challenges, which are pretty fantastic.

Also, there's more gameplay variety in the main story mode than most people think. A lot of times you have to defeat enemies in a certain order, or without using weapons, or only using weapons, or without getting hit, etc... The combat is still pretty simple, but it's definitely really fun being surrounded by 20 zombies, imps, skeletons etc.. and bashing your way to safety. You can start fights between the various enemy types too; like knock a zombie into a skeleton and then they will start fighting each other.

I'm taking my time with it and playing the mini-game challenges and after about 3 hours I figure I'm 20% done. It's a short game, maybe 10 hours if you don't play the mini-games, but maybe as much as 15 or so if you want to complete the challenges.

I have read there´s a weapon/powerup that makes appear some mini-coopers that start fighting the enemies

I´ve found some information about the secrets and extras ( from another site )

· Secrets: 100 Rare books; for every 5 a mini-game challenge is unlocked.
· 20 challenges: when you beat them with a platinum score you get an special extra ( characters 'renders', from what i´ve read but maybe other things )
· At least 2 different ends ; maybe more.
· There´s an extra level ( don´t know if its an extra dificulty level or extra rooms ) that is unlocked when you rescue the other captured girls... there may be more girls, and so more levels.

· Apart from the challenges, unlocked with the books, IGN still keeps a "secrets" page in their GbtG guide.

· There are 4 difficulty levels; 3 at first and one extra unlocked when you beat the game¿?.

· The final score, when you beat the game goes from 0 to 100 and is based on four equal parameters ( number of deaths, time to complete the game ( around 10 hours the first time ), Ghoulies killed ( 600 in total :O ) and probably the last one is rescued girls ). Getting a perfect score may open more extras

edit ( more info ):

- challenge 21 - Once you have collected all 100 rare books and won a gold medal in every minigame, a 21 challenge will be unlocked, called "Play It Again, Son!"; the same name that one of the Banjo-Tooie codes has.

- Playing with Amber - Again, once you have collected all 100 rare books and won a gold medal in every minigame, you can beat the game playing Amber. This is like another "difficult mode", because Amber will only have a 10 units life, much less than Cooper, and to make things worse you can´t use powerups neither.

as you said, around 10 hours to beat the game for the first time + all that extras.

I don´t understand why they put so much criticism in the game´s length when there are lots of other games that last the same or less hours, for example i´m playing project zero now, i have completed 2/3 of the game and the played hours are just about 7. And the controls in that game are worst than resident evil, dying a lot of times because you get stuck in tables or forniture. The story is interesting though and the game is pretty dificult.

PS: talking back about starfox, there´s another game that looks very similar and interesting, Beyond good & evil.

edit: more extras info added

Gamespy gave GBTG two stars out of five.
That's Gamespy for you. Form your own opinion on the game.

I played the demo on the newest OXM demo disc and thought it was a pretty enjoyable game. There were quite a few things in it that made me laugh. It's also extremely polished.
