God of War [PS4, PC]

They said that gods are walking the earth in this GOW so we'll probably still have those epic boss fights in the game.

I've played all 7 GOW games and I have to say, if it was the same i wouldn't be interested as much as i am with what they are doing right now. If you keep doing the same thing again and again not only development becomes boring but also gameplay becomes stale.

For the same reason why people play beat'em-ups for decades without much changing? Or racing games that haven't changed (despite becoming more realistic or immersive). Or other skill games where the objective of the game is skill and to be fun? I'm into immersive games, story driven ones as the next guy, but IMO, I find it a bit scary that every game needs to be like that. What's next? The next Trials Fusion game with the goal of the game not the skill, but entirely story driven?

I'm one of those few who absoultely adored the gameplay of GOW. I'd have no problem with much of the same with a different story. The gameplay was definitely more important than the story to me.

Gameplay looks to be heavily inspired by soulsborne which isn't a bad thing imo. GOW was definitely a lot of fun but a bit too simple, i'm not saying the new GOW will be better or worse because of the change, but i think a change was necessary for the game to make sense especially after the so-so Ascension. I also think it's a bit too early to call how the final game will shape out to be.

Someone on gaf from the behind closed door extended demo pointed out that the attacks are now mapped on the shoulder buttons. Wonder how combos will work that way unless they really have toned down the button smashing from previous entries.
We also didn't see any " free jumping " sequences, fixed camera can be tilted or controlled with the right stick. We ' ve seen evade moves but no " counter " or block yet ?
New vilains seems to be elemental base. ( fire/ lava ).
I really hope they will release that extended footage not too long after E3.
IMO I' m not really fan of having another " buddy AI " part of the gameplay. It's cool to have borrowed some elements of TLOU. but well looks like most of upcoming games will have that " TLOU " DNA implemented in most upcoming first party from Sony.
On a gameplay perspective I understand those who just want the same experience as before. But maybe it was difficult for the team to make an " evolution of the old gameplay system " and they lacked ideas without making another episode who will get biased reviews of " being the same as before.." .
Even if i' m happy with that new upcoming instalment, maybe it's time for Santa Monica to go the Guerilla games way and do something else. Or like a lot of people asked for a GOW-like, but with new fresh title, character, same gameplay, but another universe. One thing for sure, it won't please everyone and i'd like that game to succed to see something else or maybe why not go back to its root for those unhappy ?
Like Clukos said, it's too early to judge the game that early. Change is difficult for everyone. But at least let them try. I trust in Cory Balrog, he's been there since GOW 1.

Explains everything that's changed (thanks gaf):

Kratos that dies is a time remnant while the real Kratos goes back in time to save his waifu and child, and that fucks up the entire universe, replacing the olympians with norse and also changing his voice and growing a full beard.

How do people make these so quickly?? RESPEK!

I wish Kratos would fight the india pantheon instead of the norse gods, which we already see everywhere
Kratos vs Kali FTW !
I don't mind the gameplay change yet, as we haven't seen much, but all previous gow games have started with huge epic pieces.
And I certainly don't want all games with a little sister, daughter, son, brother to manage. Ico did it well, TLOU and bioshock infinite too, go use another emotional hook before it's too cliché

Reminds me of Asura's Wrath. Now that was epic.

Oooooh Egyptian gods. I actually sat through that horrendous movie that just came out, Gods of Egypt. So shit but I've always loved the mythology. In fact the whole movie kinda felt like a GOW game on steroids.

I was hoping for the Egyptian Mythology before the Norse, but oh well.

This is not God of War...my hype is dying the more I hear about it via Giant Bombs stream. I hope it turns around, but I never played GOW for the character development....sigh.

They have already done plenty of god of war that followed the same exact formula (a lot if you count the PSP, PS2 and PS3 games). I think it was time for a change and I applaud them for having the courage to really do so.
