God of War 2 - March 13th

The first is that God of War II will not only be playable on the PlayStation 3, of course, but that it will run at a true HD resolution of 720p. We're unsure as of yet whether or not we'll see additional texture detail because of this, but we'll update this section of the review when we can test it.
:D awesome.

Heh This might sound a bit grazy but the 20p support for GoW2 is so far the most tempting reason for me to purchase PS3... Now if movie rental places start offering Blu-ray movies in Finland I'll probably "jump in" very soon, eventhough I can't really afford it ATM.

nice, where did you get that info?

Will it be native 720p or upscaled?

It's in the IGN review (near the very end) that NakedZ mentioned. It doesn't mention how it will work though (i.e. upscaled or native).

The Challenge of the Gods is back, though in much better form. Featuring seven challenges rather than ten, you're now able to save after each challenge so that you don't need to leave your system on for days or weeks at a time. Additionally, you'll be given a ranking when you complete each challenge, be it Mortal, God or Titan, based on bonus objectives...

There's a new arena mode that allows you to place whatever creatures you want into a battle to take them on, though you can't do this until you've perfected Challenge of the Gods and achieved the Titan ranking.

I'm glad to see Challenge of the Gods is back and that they've tweaked it as well to give more replay value. I am slightly disappointed to hear the the arena mode is only unlocked after you beat Challenge of the Gods with a Titan rating. I'm hoping that a getting a Titan rating in all the challenges won't be as intensely frustrating as trying to complete the last challenge of the gods!

It should be pretty obvious that it is an upscale... the PS3 contains the PS2 hardware with the same spec, therefore, native would likely be impossible. Also, the timing seems to coincide with the PS3 upscaler becoming available to devs.

IGN has updated it's review

IGN said:
Editor's Correction: After posting the review, we've gotten word from an SCEA representative that the game will support 480p on the PlayStation 3 but not 720p. Our error was due to crossed information and we're sorry for the confusion. We will report back once we have the final copy in our hands.
This sucks. Somebody should lose his head at IGN.

edit: Now I'm wondering whether thay have removed the 480p support when playing on PS2 in order to make playing it on PS3 more appealing, that would suck big time.

In the least, it will be 480p for both PS2 and PS3.

Was GOW1 480p for the euro version? I know for sure the NA version was.

I'm not sure, but I kind of remember that it wasn't, not that it matters though as I have a US PS2 so the Euro situation doesn't really bother me. One of the reasons I bought the US model was that more titles support progressive output than in Europe and also high percentage of the games I'm interested in comes out significantly earlier in NA.

Well that's nice of you to say that, and it certainly is not even unlikely, but I need official confirmation to sooth me down at this point...

I wouldnt worry about it then. GOW2 will for sure be 480p in the NA version. I would bet my ps2 on it. :)

It wasn't for the Euro version, but then we do have a higher resolution to begin with, so that compensates a little (and is usually a big part of the reason why they don't manage, I think). On the other hand, it should run in 720p on the PS3, so that should be interesting.

And so I shall giveth:

God of War 2too good to be true. Way too good. Representatives from Sony Computer Entertainment America told 1UP "It's only 480p." Unless this is the software equivalent of unlocking the fourth core and a super secret, we're trusting SCEA on this one.

Did you read the thread IGN just said that the 720p thing was a misunderstandig and that it will be 480p on PS3

And so I shall giveth:

Well that can also mean that it will be 480p only on PS3, not that I think it's likely, but I want still wan't better confirmation. Nintendo did similar thing with the Twilight Princess and that's partly why I'm worried.

I have now ...

That I highly doubt. The original was 480p in the US as well. A step back wouldn't be looked upon favorably.
