GeForce-FX: Christmas?

Let me preface this by saying that this is only speculation/guesswork.

I have seen a few posts around the net claiming that some folks have received review units. I don't know the validity of these claims; however, we all know what nVidia's CEO stated many months ago. Furthermore, we also have seen several jokes, to the effect that nVidia would only need to get out a review sample before Christmas in order to "save face."

I don't know if anybody caught this quote at Anandtech...but this was from his last update.

I've got quite a bit I've been working on around here, but I'll talk about that when I get back.

Nothing concrete, but he made that post on the 20th. Since then, I've seen at least 2-3 people claim that samples are out to certain websites.

At any rate, does anybody else believe there's a chance that we might see a preview with actual performance data in/around Christmas?

On a totally different note...Tonight will mark the first time in ages that I will own a gaming console! I'm pretty jazzed about playing...

And no, it won't be an XBox :)

I think the rumours were that cards would be in reviewers hands before christmas, with performance figures posted in an effort to stop last minute christmas shoppers buying competitors hardware.

Didn't pan out that way.

Hi there,

I can't name, well, names ;) , but a number of friends who work for different games developers--even one very small studio--has received GFFX test hardware over the past few days, on loan and under a lose NDA (they are not supposed to release any performance figures or advertise with having received test boards). So I wouldn't be surprised if reviewers had got some pieces as well.

What Arnand Amand meant was:

"I've got a lot of work to do here. The fan blades from my nv30 sample (which I'm still trying to get running at 400Mhz) exploded and the shrapnel gutted my machine--took a little time to configure the back up and get another dust-buster from nVidia. Anyway--soon as I get a *working* sample, with some stable drivers, you can bet you'll see me review this thing!!!!"

It's also barely possible that he mean "Christmas" when he mentioned "a lot going on around here."

That's alot of memory 256MB and that memory bandwidth claim seems like false advertising to me!!!

Read the 'review' at the bottom half of the page - there really is some misleading comments in there.

256 MB memory
48Gb/sec bandwidth
2.5x faster than the nearest rival Radeon 9700 Pro
Twice the onboard memory
Clockspeed of 800MHz for the memory (down from 1GHz??)
Doom 3 due this year (it is still 2002).

The shipment date is the absolute best though. It seems all tongue-in-cheek almost. 2044??

Great, I wonder what the Office of Fair Trading would say?

Noticed the price as well: £329.99 inc VAT (£20 off RRP).

I have to admit that is a great price even if it was just with 128MB RAM and listed the true (KNOWN AT THIS TIME) specs of the GFFX.

Edit: typos

Price seems encouraging if that bears some resemblence to actual prices. I should imagine the date is just a system default date for when an expected date isn't put in.

I know nothing about graphics cards apart from how fast they run, but, is 16 texture units per pipe a lot?

You knew enough to notice that it's a terrible error. The GF-FX has 1 texture unit per pipe. I guess they meant 16 textures per pass (just like the 9700).

Every other sentence in that page is bull. Apparently Doom3's using DirectX9 now, and is coming out in the next 4 days.

I think that whole thing is downright hillarious

they just copied stuff down without knowing what the hell they were talking about

key funnies

16 texture units per pipeline
48.0 GB/sec memory bandwidth
Due for Shipment: 4/4/2044
Customer Rating: 5/10 (people have already rated it, and it isn't even out yet :p )

However, every now and then one product stands head and shoulders above the rest, and the Sparkle GeForce FX card does just that! (how can they know this, no reviews yet)

As such it has the ability to run the new Samsung DDR-2 RAM, which runs at a staggering 1GHz (more than that of your PC which can only run 800MHz RAM currently!). This gives it a huge memory bandwidth making the card over 2.5x faster than the current top of the market speed demon, ATI’s Radeon 9700! (that comment is just so messed up)

and features DirectX 9 which will be used in awe inspiring games like Doom 3 and Breed which are due this year!

an 800MHz memory clock speed, 500MHz core clock speed and a staggering 48 GB/sec memory bandwidth (again over twice that of its nearest rival).

This card has impressed us like no other. When we first saw the specs, we stood stunned, seeing the card in action really cannot be conveyed in words. (so they got the card then and have tested it lol)

Brent,

Actually, there is 533MHz DRDRAM out there (1066MHz "effective"), and those sticks can be overclocked too. So the DDR2 of the GFFX isn't really a stunning technical achievement or anything like that seen from a pure clock speed point of view. Of course, DRDRAM was made to scale to high levels, much more so than the parallel DDR(2) RAM, so it's not really the same thing except we DO have faster than 500MHz RAM already...

what i meant was they say it is 800Mhz memory clock, when actually the GFFX runs at 500Mhz memory, effective 1Ghz

they got the mem speed wrong in some parts of the review

You guys laugh now.. But Crap like this is whats so Infurriating for everyone except *Nvidia Worshipers*...

Total Crap, Misleading Articles and so called *reviews* of this calibur will be plastered everywhere in a matter a a few more weeks. Even Self proclaimed Technical sites like Xbit, Digit-life, Anand.. Constantly, and I mean Every single bothched propaganda laden review and article they do... Will be filled with Misrepresentations oc ATi' Tech, overstatements of Nvidia's TEch.. and flat out PR BS.

48GB.. please...

Or, The GFFX having Color Compression all the time.. which only recently has been stated by Nvidia to be EXACTLY like ATi's and only work with FSAA.

Just you wait.. Its going nowhere but DOWN the Pit of Nvidia worship hell from here..
