Gefoce 6600GT.

Who says the guy wants to upgrade? He just wants to know why the 6600GT architecture performs better. And in many games the 6600GT does have a pretty large performance increase over the 9800 Pro. In Doom 3 it's nearly twice as fast at 1024x768.

Doom3 is a bad example because it seems to be specifically engineered to run better on Nvidia hardware.

Sound like a flaim-bait, but hey wtf.

It's actually nVidia hardware that's specifically engineered to run certain things better which makes Doom3 faster.
Too bad you need OpenGL to be able to make advantage of that - but that's the API Doom3 happens to be written for.

Unless you mean to say it's unfair to judge a cards performance in Doom3 because it's written in OpenGL which favors nVidia cards. ;)

Its a 4x2 that pretends to be a 8x1 , whats the matter don't like me calling it what it is or something ?
It's not. It has eight pixel pipes, thus its fantastic shader speed, but "only" four ROPs.

Look, I'm the first in line to call nV on their BS (just see what they think of me at Anandtech), but the 6600GT isn't simply "4x2/8x0."

So you know for a fact that NV is not doing bigtime shader-replacement in Doom3?

Look, let's not get into the old shader replacement arguments etc. or Carmack is in league with Nvidia/The Devil arguments, they have been done to death here. Personally I wouldn't bother upgrading from a 9800 pro to a 6600GT, but that's not to say it isn't a good card.

And who said he doesn’t? He didn’t say either way. And I didn’t necessarily imply he had a card and was upgrading. He could upgrade from what he was thinking of buying -- a 9800pro.

they may be doing it for the nv3x, but i seriously doubt they are for the nv40.
