Gears of War 12min Xboxyde

The facial skin is quite good, I give you that. The lighting is still a bit waxy and not on the level of FF13, but that's a high target to reach.

It's also worth noting that by the time FF13 is actually released, we'll probably be playing GOW 2!

As for the armour, it's clearly NM'ed, but can you show me an atcual game that looks any better? As far as realtime stuff goes, I haven't really seen anything that looks better.

While I agree their modelling and shading is top notch I would like to see some real screenshots, not this 64 jittered samples per pixel images, ehhe ;)

I disagree.
The modeling of hairs and human skin is probably better than any other shooter i have played to date. Armor's detail is also insane.
I don't think people will be happy with the hair in the game until they see Marcus with a mullet or ponytail. I still don't see a drop in the graphics. I see a lot of change from the somewhat generatic look of the game toward the begining when the monsters were the only awesome looking models. I do want to ask why they made the choice of a soul patch for the character rather than the five o'clock shadow that Marcus had at TGS05 and X05.

Sorry for the double post. Thanks for the shots scooby. The third shot is the best job on skin textures for character of African descent that I have seen in a game. Dead Rising was close though.

But games with high polygon armors or similar tend to lack normal mapping and vice versa, its a matter of taste. Doom3 armours looked very good (back then!) but the polygon amount was very low, kind of a trade off between poly amount and mapping amount. Still except for the armor the characters in GoW have high poly amount which is visible in their face and arms. And what if the character actually has a full body mesh and then the armor applied on top?

GoW has a special look which some like and some not. The fact that the textures are hand made (more like scanned in hand drawn images) and look special may be hard for some to understand and appreciate as they think that next gen is all about textures made to look like real. But I rather have "computerish" looking textures with high detail and mapping (normal map, parallax) than a flat photorealistic texture.

For me GoW is a very fine graphically artwork.

Just my point.

according to a couple of MS people on Gaf who are playing it, the IQ looks just like that in game, but it is obviously real time cinematic.

Don't believe them until you get the game in your hands. The last thing we need is a bunch of pissed off people complaining that the AA in the game is not as good as the trailer.

Wasnt there some talk about the UE3 not being able to do AA with deferred lightning (which is what GoW uses if I am correct) but instead uses a different aproach to still have AA but not as good as it could be with 4x AA?

Not nearly as hard as longer hair. I realize that there are few of these uber-soldier types running around with beautifully flowing, long hair, but it still should be realized that it's just plain easier to render a stubble.
Which as I understand it is the main reason we haven't seen a Viking based combat game in 3D...
:yep2:

Was that CG? If that is real time then I am speachless...

It's probably in-engine, but offline rendered with a lot of AA, so the game won't look as good.

Then again if they're to play it in cinemas, they'd better get rid of any jaggies, at that size they'd be horrible...

Is it just me or is that last guy related to the UT2007 character they used for the PS3 on-stage demo? ;)

awesome... dont like the music that much... but makes it much more than a game... graphics are stunning... realtime or not nothing else comes close to that vid right now... I especially like the skin shaders...

Except the very last scene in which he looks like a plastic doll again (maybe too much specularity, maybe because of interaction with water shader).. But the video is truly spectacular.. On large TV, this is the second time that something in-game looks this good (the other one was Halo 3 video)... Next-gen is finally here :D
