I know they have heat and power issues to worry about, but 500 MHz for the graphics chip doesn't seem as fast as it should be.

Is it not fast enough if it has 64 pixel pipelines?

I didn´t see the 64 pixel pipelines thing in the GameSpy article...from where did you get that info? :?:

Read this whole thread Almasy, Joe wasn't saying X360 has 64 pipelines!

would the fillrate be something like?

24 pipelines @ 500 MHz: 12,000 Mpixels aka 12 Gigapixels

32 pipelines @ 500 MHz: 16,000 Mpixels aka 16 Gigapixels

not a bad increase from the current 932 Mpixels aka ~0.9 Gigapixels of the current Box, right ?

edit: I overlooked jvd's post.
32@500mhz=16000

That's assuming you don't use the GPU/R500 for any vertex shading but exclusively for Pixel shading...leaving the CPU only for VS work...

Mandatory Xbox Live integration for all games.
Hmmm... I wonder. Is Microsoft stupid enough to make that apply to the consumer side as well?
My guess: Yes. Yes they are.
Perhaps all games will require online authentication through XBL before they work, sorta like STEAM. So an XBL subscription would be required to play anything. That would effectively limit the Xenon userbase to no more than about 1 million customers in total.

Remember they want to make at least some money with Xenon this time. XBL authentication would effectively kill Xenon and turn it into an obscure box. ;)

Also, the content download for Xbox titles... Only a handfull of titles got 'real' support. Others games just got one extra map or so, something that didn't make retail or what they left out so they could offer it on XBL... I really hope they do something about this, it isn't a selling point anymore IMHO.

The probem with Microsoft is that they are super piracy paranoid. If they did verification online, I would totally believe it. It WOULD be a ridiculously stupid move, but still, someone over there is probably pushing for it. I know they were pretty upset at the rampant XBox modding and piracy this gen.

No Physics Processing Unit. Noooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Start a petition to ask MS to include a PPU, Dave Baumann??

LOL, yeah exactly. ;)

I don't have one myself, but I was considerng buying one for the express purpose of modding it. Then I thought - 'what's the point?' and went with a new mobo and A64 chip instead since this gen was dying down. 8)

STILL, it's true that there is a huge modding community around XBox. And what that REALLY has meant for Microsoft thus far is, we'll lose money on this console we sell you, and go ahead and pay for game development you can acquire for free.

So I could see Microsoft doing something reckless and off the cuff like that online verify. And they would pay quite the price if they did....

Its not going to happen authentication on Live that is.

Well I don't dispute that - I don't think it will either. I was just giving reasons for why they would. Microsoft is losing quite a bit of money this gen to piracy.

Even if they did have some sort of verification or activation system, think of windows XP for a minute, you can activate it either online or by phone for those people who don't have internet access, I doubt they'd be that stupid enough to alienate most of their target audience, by making an activation system that can only be done online.

Most people who mod it don't do it to pirate xbox games there guy. It's also a cheap media center. I doubt there will be online authentication for anything besides maybe a fancier way than they do now for playing ON xbox live. If you can see "Microsoft doing something reckless and off the cuff like that online verify" then obviously you need some glasses.

Oh no doubt, I totally agree.

Whoa! Reach over and grab your medication dude! ;)

It's all hypothetical I'm talking here. Of course people don't ALL mod their XBox to play pirated games - I wasn't going to do it for that reason - I was going to mess with Linux. BUT, people who do mod it to that extent, I have found, rarely end up paying for the games in the end anyway.

And if you dispute that, well, you know some more upstanding folk than I do.

If MS is requiring all games to have a minimum resolution of 1280x720 then what does that mean for Europe? They're going to spend a large part of the XBox 2's power on something people won't see in Europe until like 2008..

Point being?
