Gamescom 2013, general thread

I think a lot of public could get in yesterday from 14:00 or something like that. But yeah, the big public days are from Thursday to Sunday.

And yes, we're definitely getting more videos now. ;) I did a lot of videos on the two times I went there myself as well. However, what you can get video of tends to be very limited on public days - anything that is 18+ (which is more in Germany than average) means you'll be queueing up for hours to even be able to get an eye on, let alone a hands on (though actually that tends to be the same).

I hated this so much that I didn't even go to the press day this year - even on press day, wait times for those closed cubicles are 30 minutes and up. Normally something like being able to see the PS4 live would have convinced me to go, but this time I just sent a letter of complaint to the organisation with a very constructive, polite version of 'change this shit or go fuck yourselves'. I realise that publishers like the 'control' but the public would be far better off if we just take 6 of the 8 large halls and make those 18+ areas, so that you can walk around and see games, and can decide to queue up for playing the game based on what you see (or not at all, if seeing the game in action is enough for you - as is often the case for me).

Thankfully, I'll just have the final hardware on the 29th of November, from the looks of things. Better just not think about it too much before that time. ;)

GamesCom is huge though, biggest consumer event for games in the world now, with 279.000 visitors in total last year (around 60.000 per day).

Looks like our digital foundry face offs will have to wait (from neogaf)

Did anyone have the chance to compare any of the major PS4/XB1 3rd-party offerings? Like NFS Rivals, CoD, BF, the Ubisoft titles, etc - how do they look compared on both platforms? Any differences (major or minor)?

As far as I can tell no game was displayed both platforms.

Ubisoft titles ran of PCs, all I remember from NFS is that I was holding a PS4 controller - don´t know if it was plugged into a PC or a PS4

We have footage from someone playing the NFS demo with a PS4 controller, which after it ends, crashes to Windows. So yeah ...

no faux outrage like at e3 when xbox one games were crashing to windows ? Interesting. I'd be thinking its a bigger deal with both systems out in 3 months

It certainly isn't because the forum warriors have matured in that time. It's because it wouldn't fit with the scenarios other sites or web forums have. Remember it's only click-bait news if it's anti-MS. The moment it shows it's par for the course for both system, you've already lost your viewers. You wouldn't want to turn away your viewers with a solid dose of reality.

And that's only because this gen it's the fashion. Last gen it was the fashion to slag off Sony. Popular media always needs to have a hero and a villain in any story.

That's why it'd be nice to have somewhere in the digisphere where people don't have emotional attachments to these boxes beyond liking playing on them. Seems a good half of the talk on B3D is about the console warring rather than the machines and the games and the technologies...

Part of the prolem is that meaningful contributions are obscured by open and obvious biases *shrug* It doesnt matter what the technical benefits of one thing or another is to some people, if its not on their system of choice.

Public day on Gamescom:

Play "spot the female" :p

Ok, there are a few actually.

There's the core demographic I'm always blabbering about to a tee, relatively young and male.

Anyways it's good to see a lot of people loving core/console gaming.

I still kinda think E3 should go public again at least some days. Certainly adds some excitement.

Although true, one has to bare in mind that this sample represents 'people who want to game and also are willing to stand around for hours in crowded halls to see a glimpse of the new consoles and games,' which will tend to exclude large segments of the population with, um, better things to do with their time. ;) I can't think of any trade conference that'll be a draw for women, whereas they often outnumber the fellas at pop concerts and the like.

CES 2013 with large, balding middle-aged men.
Gadget Show Live, more of the same
Clothes Show Live, ~100% young female

Mobile World Congress seems full of suited men, but those images may be from trade days and not public. not even sure if MWC is open to the public. But the take home point is, those willing to attend a show aren't necessarily representative of your market. You wouldn't stop making menswear just because no man ever goes to a fashion show. ;)
