FX and PS 1.4, DX9 tests?

Addition...

Take a look at the recent Carmack .plan file. (Which is kind of a "shootout" specifically for Doom3).

Any guess on whether he has an Ultra or non Ultra?

How different do you suppose his .plan file "analysis" would be if he only had access to a 400/400 card, rather than the 500/500 Ultra....Are his .plan file comments even relevant any more?

I would like to see him update his .plan file based on the 400/400 FX...and give his thoughts on performance of cards that more than a handful of people can actually buy...

I'm sure he will have something to say about it! And I bet it won't be kind....

Joe, I agree with everything you said concerning the Ultra and reviews.

Then it's up to nvidia to supply web-sites with actual 5800 (non-ultra) p/review samples.
That is IMO the whole point.
We have a (probably) discontinued product to benchmark, and a product that will (probably) make it to retail but is not available to benchmark.
So what to do until we get confirmation of the rumours and a retail 5800?

1) Continue benchmarking the Ultra but state it will be not available for retail
2) Stop benchmarking the Ultra altogether as it will be not available for retail
3) Continue benchmarking the Ultra at 5800 clocks and state results may differ from a "real" 5800

I thought Typedef was exclusively for approach 3, while I would prefer 1 with 3 as an addition.
I hope I do make sense. :)

About Carmack:
I too would like him to update his .plan file as soon as possible.
You bring up very good points Joe as this questions should IMO apply to the upcoming 3DMark03 in the same manner.

Is it just a review of the tech and general impressions of the card, or is it presented as an article to help the consumer to decide which card to buy?
It can be neither. It can simply be an (interesting) article of a product that perhaps can no longer be bought.

Actually, I believe your choice of words are wrong - it should be an article of the tech and a review of a product to help consumers with purchasing decisions. There hasn't been one "review of tech" review and all "articles of products to help consumers" come out as reviews. Hehe.

As for Carmack, I too would like a comment or two from him regarding this. I'd like to ask him myself but he has already regarded me as being "pushy" before!

I imagine Carmack might feel a little used by NVidia, since he was put in the position of, if not actually endorsing, at least giving the benefit of the doubt to the NV30 (and its code path) on the basis of a card that would never make it to retail.

Of course, he's probably more mad at ATI for the whole leaked Doom thing...

Actually, I expect Carmack to ignore the R350 announcment / release. I suspect we won't hear much from him until the NV35 launches.

(That is assuming that Doom3 isn't shipping until after the NV35 ships.)

Why would he ignore the release? If it is only a speed bump with no features that impact Doom 3, I agree he might not mention it until he has cause to talk about something else that has changed, unless he decides stating there is a "new fastest card" for Doom 3 is in order (I don't know that he would).

But if it has ANY feature at all that changes Doom 3 performance for better or worse besides what would be expected for the change in clock speed, he would have ample reason to make an update.

Unless Carmack gets an NV35 at or around the time he gets an R350 (doesn't seem likely to me), I'd expect otherwise.
