Fox proprietary DRM on Blu-ray discs

Did a search but couldn't find anything on this.

This ain't good...

Another problem plaguing Blu-ray development is a requirement placed on the organization when it signed a deal with Fox Studios. Fox had demanded that high-definition DVDs utilize a stricter copy-protection format than AACS, which is employed by both Blu-ray and HD DVD. While HD DVD rejected the demand, Blu-ray conceded.

Knox said Fox was unhappy with the decision to let consumers watch movies where they please using Mandatory Managed Copy. Managed Copy has become a contentious point in the next-generation DVD battle, with HP demanding that Blu-ray require the technology on all discs. However, as Fox's proprietary DRM will run after AACS, the studio could theoretically restrict such portability.

This proprietary format is also rumored to have delayed the PlayStation 3, which will include a Blu-ray drive for the masses. Pioneer is set to launch a $1,800 Blu-ray player in May.

May be I am off base, but Mandatory Managed Copy should be just that, mandatory. So how is it that Fox would be allowed to circumvent that option? Shouldn't they just price it higher than anyone would be willing to pay for? I mean if I wanted a movie and noticed that it was missing MMC then I would probably think twice about purchasing that movie. But if it had MMC but at a high price, I may still purchase it.

I dunno, maybe I am wrong. It just seems like Fox is going with BR due to MMC not being so much of the first M.

Sigh... There is no such feature as MMC... There's just Managed Copy and it's an optional part of the AACS spec. The HD-DVD group just made managed copy mandatory for an HD-DVD compliant disc. I'm also rather curious to what this "proprietary" DRM scheme is, especially since all the schemes present in Blu-Ray were present before Fox was seriously courted. And I doubt this story about it causing delays for the PS3. (the delays in the 1.0 spec of AACS alone are plenty enough to cause that...)

Ah, then I do stand corrected. Many posts here made it appear as though Bluray did adopt managed copy as a mandatory feature, like HD-DVD.
