Found a Video about Cell...

It'll do anything you like, available memory space and your patience/competence permitting. Cell's a freely programmable general purpose multiprocessor, so it can do raytracing or whatever else you as a programmer might think of.

It might not do it realtime, but then again, that's the case with pretty much every other processor out there...

Ii's an interview by someone who doesn't really understand the tech he's talking about with a couple of dull IBM types, covering info we already know and not very accurately - not worth seeing. The oly bit of raytracing was the terrain demo shown at E3 '05 - seen it all before. Though this time it was running off a single 3.2GHz 8 SPE BBE at 720p @ 20-30 fps. I presume the adaptive multisampling AA was still in place, so for a flight game it may be possible to use this as a terrain generation technique in PS3 at lower quality

Really though, nothing here to learn or discuss. And here was I hoping it was some new demo :(

thanks for the video, it was interesting to see Jim Kahle the chief architect of CELL talking in laymens terms about what CELL can do and where it will and won't be put into.

although, heh, he said the PS3 would have 9 cores ;)

1PPE + 7SPE's + 1 Redundant SPE..... I think that he meant to say that All cells will be 9 core chips "at least for now " .

That video is really old, it was linked here over a year ago, if not more.

Anyway, people with handles like yours always makes me cringe and duck!
