Firewire networking gone from Vista?

Of course the day I need the feature they removed it. Now I have no idea what use I might have of the 2 firewire ports on my system..

Or can I magically make the firewire support reappear somehow?
Peace.

The Firewire network adaprer doesn't show up in the device manager on tge vista box.
It does on the XP box I watn to network it up to..

I tried to connect a cable between them regardless but that fdid not coax thge vista box into showing the network adapter.

Peace.

Wow the only started support for it not too long before (what is it with ms lately they seem to be removing support for a lot of stuff)
i remember when i got my audigy it came with a 3rd party program to enable firewire networking for o/s's that didnt support it. firenet it was called i wonder if someone has made a program for vista

Edit: appears the makers of firenet support vista

edit 2: on closer inspecition i maybe wrong anyway look for yourself i think they have trials if you only need to use it for a day or two

With most motherboards these days shipping with gigabit ethernet NICs built in, there's not much point to firewire networking.

Wait, so is it NETWORKING over FW that is gone or FW support completely? As in I'm going to have problems sending over video from my Video Camera. Just the former, right?

Just Firewire Networking is gone. You can still use Firewire in its "normal" capacity just fine in Vista. Firewire networking was pretty damn rare and I'm not surprised support was removed.

Yes you can you just need a usb link cable

USB Link Cable

• Single chip (ASIC) USB host to host communication
• High speed data transfer of up to 12Mbps
• Windows 98, NT, ME, 2K, XP compatible
• Easy drag and drop file transfer
• Includes print function for remote files
• Compliant with USB specification 1.1

This USB cable allows you to easily connect two computers with USB port and instantly transfer files with great ease.
This cable provides peer to peer file transfer at much greater speed than traditional file transfer via a serial or parallel port.

some people are really adverse to opening their pc case
ive had people ask me to replace a cdrom drive for them

That's like me saying "you can't print from a USB port" and you going "yes you just buy a printer to plug into it"..

That thing you link to is a peripheral. There's no innate support fro linking 2 PCs using USB: that's why upstream connector on a USB cable is rectangular and downstream is square.

Peace.

It is inherently impossible to connect two PCs together via a simple USB cable (under Windows). While USB link cables are 'networks', they aren't networks in the ethernet sense of the word. They're more like two USB powered IC devices bolted together. They rely on either emulation with proprietary software, or (on XP built in) drivers to function as a virtual network using Remote NDIS .
