FIFA World Cup 2010

Next up for the US is Ghana on Saturday, to which I must say:

USA! USA! USA!

Aww, cmon, if there's anyone you should really be pissed at the refs it's the Micks. Not that they would've played any better than Les Bleus but still.
D vs E is going to be hilarious. Both teams have sucked so bad up until now that our only hope is that their combined suckiness magically cancels itself out and the match is transformed into something glorious.
Bah, who am I kdding? Germany is going to win the penalty shootout 5:7 after the first goalless 120 min and then gets kicked out the next round :D

That reminds me of the one thing I liked about the USA vs. Algeria game. Both teams were going to go out with a lot of offense rather than turtling up defensively like so many matches during this World Cup.

Ghana, eh? Wow, the US might have a pretty good chance to make it to the round of 8 if they can continue to focus and play with urgency.

What's going on with this?

Thierry Henry has arrived in Paris for talks with French President Nicolas Sarkozy as the inquest into France's woeful World Cup performance continues
Doesn't Sarkozy have anything better to be doing with his time?!

shame about italy , but i guess thats what happens when you send an aging team to the world cup. Hopefully the USA can go all the way. Might make major inroads into the popularity here in the states

It's a diverting move, he has quiet some command on media...
But there is some serious money behind his move too, in 2016 the Euro cup is in France we need a good team to maximise the economical impact of the event ;)

Japanese team scored two goals off set pieces...and this was without set piece God Shunsuke Nakamura taking either of the shots.
Danish players were so busy trying to block the freekick that they accidentally forgot to give a clear view to their Goal keeper...TWICE !

Also a really Great finish by Van Persie !!

EDIT: So Japan won 3-1, they simply outclassed the Danish team...even the one goal Denmark was able to score was almost saved cause the keeper managed to save the penalty only to get it deflected back towards Tomasson. Honda's pure class !!

And Netherlands won 2-1....Robben showed why he's among the best players in the world, eventhough he played for just 20 minutes or so.

Brazil vs. Portugal tomorrow. I hope it'll be a great match. Also, Chile vs. Spain later. All in all a great evening of football.

USA deserved to win and end top imo. Good for them. Japan was very, very impressive with their passing and goals. Two free kicks were top notch and the third goal was very good play by the assisting player.

USA totally deserved it. They had some good goals wrongly annulled. England vs. Germany is a grudge match if there ever was one.

At least Italy went out with a beautiful distance goal. It was truly perfectly done.

I'm glad to see Japan make it. I was amazed how many people here in Japan that I work with thought Japan would be knocked out of the first round before the WC even started.

Sad to see NZL eliminated though. Was rooting for the little buggers.

I think Coulibay did a lot to get at least the US national team some huge popularity here. Nothing like feeling someone is out to get your country to get the people rooting and paying attention their team. And then the disallowed goal in the last match just reinforced that feeling. I think after those the US national team has the most support its ever had.

Joke of the day

The FIFA 2010 World Cup is like World War 2

The French and Italians left early, the Americans joined late while the English and Germans are left to fight it out.

Catastrophic game from the danish side. The first goal was a clear goalie drop, Sørensen moved to the wrong side before he could see the ball and never recovered. The second set piece goal looked dodgy too from a danish defense pov. Still beautifully kicked by the japanese in both cases.

A deserved win for the japanese, but I think they'll be sent home after their next game. They produced two goals on set pieces, with clear defending/goalie errors, their 3-1 goal was scored on a counter attack at a point in time when one of Denmarks central defenders, Krøldrup, was substituted for a forward, and the other, Agger, was playing as one.

Cheers

The Ivory Coast can hold their heads high, they were in a very difficult group and performed pretty well.

The Portugal - Brazil match was, at least in the first half, very emotional. The referee wasn't very good, he fanned the flames instead of putting them out and he should have dealt out a red card for that early deliberate hands. Still, we saw some good attacks and shots but ultimately it was a disappointment since both teams were through and didn't want to take risks.

Well Im glad NZ got knocked out, hopefully some of the hyperbole in the NZ media will now abate, also (like the rest of the planet, except the ppl in italy) are glad that italy got knocked out as well.

Hopefully one of the south american teams wins
matches of the next round, Germany v England + Spain v Portugal
A bit of trivia you may not know, I heard on the radio yesterday since 1966
Germany has been in 11 worldcup + European finals
England has been in Zero!!!!!

Whilst England are always overhyped I didnt think they were *that* bad, its a pity wimbleton is on at the moment, cause we'ld be hearing all the talk about murray being a major chance to win it this year. Ild laugh if he did esp if england win the WK. he'ld be like Whys noone listening to me I just won wimbleton, guys comeon now, guys....

The ref was mad. 7 yellows in 45min. I'm sure the game officials gave him a good talking to as he had no more yellows in the second half. I personally saw about 3 definite yellows, 4 maybe but the rest were not yellow card worthy.

The game was played at a frantic pace in the beginning and that deliberate hand ball could've been a red.

Missed goals shots from both teams though made the second half a slightly quiet game.

Meireles should have scored though.

Coentrao and Duda shouldn't have got their yellows though and Tiago's yellow would've just been waved on by other better refs.
