Fewer PS3s this year than previously claimed.

Btw, anyone else notice some recent MS material has been saying 10M units by the end of CY 2006? Before it was 10M units before Sony launched, but now they are adding a 6 week grace period... which only contains the biggest sales day of the year.

The 10M makes sense if you understand companies talk in terms of shipped=sold, and that 4-8 future weeks of inventory are already shipped at any given time.

What this means is by saying they wish to ship 10m by Mid-Nov (PS3 launch) that conveniently means it likely includes most if not all Christmas shipments of Xbox360.

Enterprising individuals would have made preorders early on specifically for that purpose.
*cough*

Those individuals would probably be excited by this news item here.
It'll be a good christmas if you actually get one.

Looks like it could have been just a miss communication. They are expected to ship 6 million ps3 in fiscal 2006 not calander 2006. Sony's fiscal year ends March 07'

It was 6 million by March (or end of) we were told. And we're told they are capable of 1 million units a month. So that'd be 3 million needed by the end of the calendar year, not 2 million. I can't remember any specific numbers for units other than 6 million by March though.

If Sony starts manufacturing in september and can make 1M / month they would be on track for 6M by March.

Hard target for sure..

Sony said 4 million by december 31 at E3 2006.

We will ship 2 million during launch period, 4 mil by he end of 2006, and 2 mil more by March 31st 2007, he says. So, six million by then.

Sony promised to have 2 million PlayStation 3 consoles available during the launch window and ship 4 million PS3s worldwide by the end of 2006. By March 2007 the company plans to supply 6 million game consoles to the market.

Have they not started manufacturing, or have they not started assembly?

If they haven't started manufacturing, then they'd be lucky to launch this year at all. IBM has been giving updates on the state of Cell yields, so I'm sure this isn't the case. A million a month doesn't mean that the first month of manufacturing they could churn out that many pieces of hardware. Once lead times caught up, though, they could easily do that.
