Yep, they had to pick the most valuable thing in the water..and see if they could ruin it. I'm pretty sure they could have done the same test with a metal box filled with scrap wires. This type of thing happens in all levels of government. It's no wonder the USA is completely bankrupt.

It doesn't matter how much the aiming system and the laser costs, that's no reason to destroy VALUABLE, perfectly new and workable equipment. They could just as well have aimed the damn thing at a barge loaded with rubbish.

Idiot reasoning like yours is to a large part reason why we have such a shitty civilization on this planet.

The outboard motors could very well have been cast out of solid silver and still been cheap compared to the laser and the aiming system, is that a reason to sink a quarter ton of precious metal to the bottom of the ocean? No, of course not.

Dumping relative pricing comparisons where they belong - on the shitheap - in absolute terms 2x200HP outboarders are fucking expensive, they're gotta be worth ~$25k, maybe more. There's no sane, credible reason whatsoever to destroy them just to test a very very very very expensive laser.

How much useful stuff can you do for $25k? Quite a bit if you think about it.

for the US Navy, $25k will get you about 2 hammers and a toilet seat.

it's also possible they were non working or mockups, or perhaps it belonged to some drug lord and he bailed out just before the laser strike. :D

Where the hell would you buy such expensive motors? I suppose you might be right that if it is a government agency, or you purchasing them you might be so foolish as to pay that much, but others can find them much cheaper. When you are modeling a system likely designed for asymmetric warfare and defending against small boats like this why would you not model the system correctly? That would be the height of stupidity. Granted they should have had the boat zooming around using the motors and that would provide a valid reason to have them to begin with.

So build a realistic-looking mockup and pull it via a cable using another boat, one where you won't set fire to its most complex and valuable components.

Sorry but if I was an admiral or something looking at possibly authorizing the mass production of robotic laser weapon systems for maritime defence, I'd want the testing process to include actual authentic targets. You need to make sure you can disable a boat that is trying to escape or enter unauthorized waters. That involves a running engine.

Then use an engine from the 1980's you can pick up on craigslist, not one straight off the lot...... Anyone for a broken window??

All this is besides the point, the US government is completely broke and you can bet military spending will be MUCH less in the future than what it is now. This is just another example of military contractors getting fat pockets while the public is beeing fleeced. I've even lost count of the number of conflicts the USA is in right now..I believe it's up to 4 or 5.

Iraq
Afghanistan
Lybia
Pakistan <-Drone strikes
Somalia <- Still doing covert operations
