Elite, Braben, Kickstarter!

They thought that they could do a snapshot of the online galaxy to provide an offline mode. In the end they couldn't.
How on earth "couldn't" they? They decided they didn't want to, that I could buy (even though it would be dealbreakingly disappointing), but how would it not be possible, period? That's just stupid lies, and I'll hate them and their fucking game forever for pulling a deception like that.

So if you're in solo mode you won't see any other players? That's fine, I don't really care if you have to always be online since I am always online anyway.

But do other players still impact your economy etc.?

I would imagine it would to a certain extent as the game you play is still the same universe as the online. It's just updated less frequently as it doesn't need to keep track of whether players will encounter each other.

Regards,
SB

It's possible depending on how large their universe is. If their universe takes up 200+ GB of data, is it reasonable to expect players to download 200+ GB of data just for the universe in addition to the client files for the game itself? What if the universe was 500+ GB of data? Over 1 TB or data? Unreasonable? Hard to say considering Star Citizen is going to be over 100 GB, and that likely isn't going to be the entire universe either as it's also focused around an online persistent universe.

a 720K floppy ought to be enough for any universe! (not counting 3D models, textures etc.)

Perhaps it's simply unwillingness to provide snapshots (weekly? monthly?) and the burden of terrible synchronisation problems, race conditions (I'm just throwing the term around), support nightmare or well if you go multplayer for a little while and then back to singleplayer you get that choice :
- undo everything you've done since the last snapshot
- wait for the next snapshot
- have the game dev/studio/publisher snapshot the world just for you. That will hammer their storage systems, bandwith, IT admin. Bonus point : they store the last snapshot they did just for you so that they can send you delta updates from the one they're building. That'd be probably worse on their back-end (but better for your external bandwith and their external bandwith)

So how did they generate 200+GB of universe data? They had an algorithm that computed it, of course. Nobody sits and enters 200GB into a database manually. So have the algorithm re-compute the database for each customer during the install procedure; or perhaps limit the size, as a single player wouldn't have the ability to explore everything anyway. Also, store it in a compressed archive... ;)

I think devs often have too much of a hardon for making everything online, because in their heads it can make the game more fun. In reality though, unless you're like 14 yo with a group of friends who all have the free time to game with you togther, most gamers will spend the majority of the game time playing solo.

I play in the open persistent universe, and yet despite this, I rarely see groups of human players moving around together. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it.

So I just bought my first ship recently. Went from my starting Sidewinder to a brand spanking new Cobra Mk III. Kitted it out with all new gear. Currently I'm sporting 2 x gimballed Beam Lasers for my medium hard points. A missle rack and Fragment Cannon. I've been able to take down ship much bigger than me.

Really loving the game so far.

Ok so I had my first experience of real loss last night...

Spent the majority of the evening dogfighting pirates in a Resource Extraction Zone (RES) in LT 18589. I was on a role, literally popping off ship after ship of dat wretched pirate scum, and totting up hundreds of thousands of credits in bounties as I went.

Was at it for about 3-4 hours, had just decimated two Pythons and an Imperial Clipper and I see this little shitty Sidewinder farting its piddly pulse lasers across my class 3C shields. I could have ignored the bastard, he was only worth maybe about 5-9k CR in bounties, but I couldn't resist chasing him down and vaporising him on a single charge of my 3x Beam Laser onslaught for his audacity in trying to provoke me.

So I start chasing the nutter. I notice that I've been dogfighting so long that the whole RES has rotated into the dark side of the planet, so I remind myself to fly cautiously and remember to turn on my ship lights when I get the chance.

So i'm stuck to the thrusters of this bitch sidewinder, up his arse, scorching his power plant with my two medium hard point lasers. I'm outta missles, but for a piddly weasel like this, even my lasers are overkill. I'm thinking "after this one I'll head back and cash in my bounties". After about a minute of constant scorching his back blows out and I see him rear up ready to go supernova. "Serves him right," I tell him, before realising at the last minute that I'm on a collision course with a bloody massive asteroid and I'm still travelling at boost velocity.

I try to pull up but I know I'm basically f**ked. Then I watch helplessly as my ship slams into the side of the black asteriod face... Boom!... Roughly 2.5m Cr in bounties lost, and a 150k Cr insurance payment to get my ship back with all its upgrades...

all because I forgot to turn on my ship lights...

... I friggin love this game

Good story!

Also, that's why you play singleplayer games, where F5 means "quicksave" and F10 is "quickload"... ;) "Ah hah hah! No I didn't just f--k up - that actually didn't happen!" - or that's what you can tell yourself anyway in the dim gloom of your gaming mancave, and nobody else knows any different either!

Oh gawd, isn't F6 quicksave and F7 quickload?
I'm sure I fucked up at least once. (in FPS games) losing half a hour or so of game progress when I did awesomely well (after X bad tries), or saving at 3HP with a really angry bad guy or monster a breath away.

That's why a proper quicksave system keeps that last few quicksaves. This should be standard practice in all games that support quicksaving (but it's not because of stupid).

Oh gawd, isn't F6 quicksave and F7 quickload?
DOOM (which I consider the benchmark in such things ;)) used F5/F10. F6 is odd, because you can't hit it (as) quickly, and...WHY? And having load right next to save is dangerous and foolish...hence F5 and F10. ;)

Got a DK2 yesterday. From opening the box I was up and running in Elite Dangerous after about 30 minutes. I think I played about 8 hours or so. Mind bendingly good.

I finally got enough credits to buy a cobra mk 3 towards the end of the evening. Sitting in that for the first time and launching into space while using the rift... since loving to play elite on a zx spectrum. Looking around the cockpit... It was quite emotional.

I think I've had the chance at this point to test most things in VR including Eve Valkyrie and I still think the best full game experience is Elite Dangerous (and will probably continue to be for the next year or so). It's actually a little worrying as Elite Dangerous could have much better VR integration if it received more focused attention. Maybe.. hopefully.. if the consumer VR units sell well enough they'll have more incentive to work on the VR aspect. I could totally see the game going in the opposite direction though if arcadey gamepad/XBox becomes a more lucrative user market than the uber-sim HOTAS + VR users.

I completely agree. One thing that gives me a bit of hope is that David Braben apparently said (quite a while ago, to be fair) that the rift is his preferred way of playing the game. Another is that they've just updated to SDK 5 in a recent patch. It might not be SDK 6 but that's only just out and they'll need some lead time. Shows someone is doing something rift related.

Curved menus would be the main thing I'd want after sinking god knows how many hours into it the last few days. There's a couple of minor issues with the galaxy and system maps, but I find them usable enough with a HOTAS. It's also curious how I get better performance running in 4k DSR with the rift quality slider down to minimum, than native 1080p with the rift slider all the way up. The text looks marginally more readable with DSR rather than rift quality, and there's less shimmer too.

FDev's have bigged up how they're own tech and self publishing had allowed them to drop VR support in at an early stage. I'd expect they will get things polished ready for cv1. Release is still 6 months away after all.

Hopefully the spaceship/sim market grows big enough that joystick manufacturers can release constellation/lighthouse hardware in future.

Then I just need to find the cash for a new pc, hmd and trackable hotas. :)

Close Quarters Combat
A new game mode. CQC is arena style PvP mode where pilots fly around complex space stations shooting the fuck out of each other without worrying about insurance costs or breaking galactic laws. It's coming to the xbox one first, but will be appearing on PC later this year. Sounds like a bunch of fun to me. If you're curious about it, you can read a developer interview on it here.

Surprise News at Gamescom
Completely BS marketing tactic of announcing an announcement, but I can't help but be intrigued as to what we'll be finding out in the first week of August. They've called it a surprise, so many are speculating that it is not the forthcoming planetary landing expansion, being able to walk around your ship, or Thargoids.

... and trackable hotas. :)
What's the point of a trackable HOTAS? Surely the fixed position nature of the cockpit leads to you sitting down and playing it? I can see the appeal of room tracking the player as it is nice to get up and walk round the cockpit - in fact I did this in limited fashion the other day as I've positioned the DK2 camera a decent distance away. The best bit was sticking my head through the side window and seeing all the little details on the side of my ship.

This is probably one of the central reasons why I get so much more out of ED than anything else in VR right now. I'm able to set my X55 up so that they're positioned exactly in the spots relative to my body as I see them to be in the virtual cockpit (I have the throttle and stick strapped to speaker stands on either side of my chair, and then adjust the height and tilt of the chair to line everything up to how I see it in game.) At that point the only visual mismatch I see is the idle animation of the fingers and thumbs adjusting their grips. I'm waiting/hoping that they'll release a 0.6 SDK integration soon with async timewarp and compositor support for the cockpit menus and HUD - that upgrade would completely change the experience as the performance stuttering would be gone and you'd be able to get some selective supersampling done to the areas that need it most.

The point of a trackable hotas is that you can position the controller how you like and have it reflected in game. The default setup isn't perfect for everyone.
