Did Sony ever promise Toy Story quality visuals for PS2?

I see this claim posted all the time when people try to say negative things about Sony. But I've never seen an actual source where someone from Sony was quoted saying this.

So is it true or bogus like the "no one will ever need more than 640k" - Bill Gates quote?

I've seen other people say it was David Kirk of nVidia.

Hardly matters, though. Sony and Ken certainly made enough swooping, high-minded comments about the PS2. (Vague as they might be.)

David Kirk said something slightly different (and much more realistic):

http://www.nvidia.com/object/IO_20020109_4391.html

"The developers and end-users have spoken, they're tired of poor-quality artificial intelligence, blocky characters, limited environments and other unnatural looking scenes," said David Kirk, chief technologist at NVIDIA. "This new graphics capability is the first step towards an interactive Toy Story or Jurassic Park."

Also found a quote ABOUT the PS2, but doesn't seem to be quoting Sony directly:

http://money.cnn.com/1999/03/01/life/playstation/

PlayStation 2, though, is claiming to be able to handle 50 times more 3-D image data than the Dreamcast, allowing it to create characters similar in appearance to those in the Walt Disney film "Toy Story."

I'd like to see Sony's actual quote.

People seem to think Phil Harrison uttered this now infamous quote, but the reality is that he didn't. It's a quote perpetuated by anti-Sony people that need to add that quick jab to give their argument instant credibility.

Nope, MS and Bill Gates are the one that promise Toy Story visual for Xbox

Gates said the 3-D chips in the Xbox would be three times faster than anything on the market and offer nearly unlimited graphical visuals. "We're approaching the level of detail seen in Toy Story 2," he said, referring to the computer-generated kids film from Disney/Pixar.

"Game developers will finally be able to develop games as they can visualize it in their minds, without having restrictions placed on them due to performance."

Approaching in this one is the key word and then above it was framed to sound like it was direct, but you'll never know. Who honestly cares anyway? If someone results to such "quotes" for an arguement then they're clearly lacking in the first place. At some point in time graphics are always over promised, be it by the hardware, software, or whoever people.

Yes this argument is used alot in the console wars, mostly by xbox fans against sony.
Although sony never said that (it was a reporter, not sony), some xbox kid picked the line and spread it as if it was sony. Word spreads mouth by mouth.
6 years later, if you go into teamxbox today and ask who said that, they all say Sony and you cant be dared to say otherwise.

Its just a true quote not from sony, but you know, this is internet. "i heard it was x or y" its enough these days to be a fact.

cheers
