More of Your Destiny Questions Answered by Bungie

PCGamer: Do we have access to entire world maps? Or are planets simplified down to a handful of cities, dungeons with a few square miles of wilderness?

Dave Dunn: We want players to be able to explore every area of the gorgeous destinations our amazing art team have built, and they each are pretty huge and feature a lot of variety. Between the story sections, public spaces and Strikes there will be plenty of terrain to cover, on foot or on your own personal vehicle.

firevanguard: Is every planet in the Solar System accessible? Specifically Venus and Mercury?

Dave Dunn: Exploring the solar system and reclaiming treasures we lost at the fall of our Golden Age is an integral part of Destiny. As a Guardian, you will be the first to set foot on our worlds lost since the collapse of our colonies, of those destinations, the ones we have announced so far are Earth, the Moon, Mars and Venus.

Man I love what Bungie is trying to achieve with this game. I love exploring especially when the environments are huge and interesting like what's been shown so far. If they could make that work seamlessly I think it would add a lot to the RPG element of the game.

I never completed the main mission in inFamous. I played the side quests until I burnt out.

Same for Mass Effect. I never completed the game. Went mining all over the place, did the side quests and left. :devilish:

At least I'm starting to see the differences between the announced games. Previously, it was FPS #1, FPS #2, Driving #1, Driving #2, etc.

Really like the world, and the player designs, but the enemies are kind of bleh and the gameplay still isn't doing it for me.

Hmm. Not sure what to do think other than it feels like Shadowrun. Not getting too excited.

Agree on this. Love the worlds, love the characters but enemies seem stuck in some old time warp of design and gameplay seems like standard Borderlands grind with Halo mechanics. I am so digging the atmosphere, but BL2 got broing soon, I want this to be enticing and Bungie plans on running it for 10 years. Either they are not showing stuff yet or it just isn't ready. I hope it turns out fun, I really want it to.

I think it suffers from the shackles of current gen. and since they plan to carry it on for 10 years, will it ever be unshackled really? Can we expect a graphics or mechanics leap later?

This is true, and it's a fair point. I just hope they come up with some compelling game play. I haven't really seen any yet.

The thing that I think is weak so far is the sound fx...they have no body to them. There's no feeling of satisfaction when shooting. I know the setting is in the future but they should give them more punch. Also the explosions don't sound too impressive. This same sound issue plagues the Halos games too. The enemy designs are ok but they seem too easy to kill.

Just saw this closed door E3 demo at IGN

Never seen the part where he talks about "older Russia" and that you could actually explore that area, but it's exactly what I had envisioned.

Game Informer has a 14-page exclusive story in Issue 249, Jaunary 2014. After reading it, it has kind of piqued my interest now. The enemies are forgettable & it sucks their is no central hero character. But the integration of MMO, open-world, co-op, single player & multiplayer into one big massive world is intriguing to say the least. They are definitely going into uncharted waters here. They have the makings of redefining how you do MMORPGs & online shooters. I just wished it wasn't in a new game universe that so far I could care less about. Put it in the Halo Universe then I would have been buying a system day 1 for it.

Check out Game Informer's special site here...

Didn't see the magazine article on their site, but they have an update tomorrow.

I just wished this game was next gen only. They can't really go crazy with levels, enemies, AI, etc when they ave to make sure it works on current gen too.

GI Article Summary (Source : Bungie forum)

Build a Gaurdian (Character customization/progression) -

- The Tower, our home base where we go back between missions. There are vendors, you can turn in quest items, we can interact with other players in open plazas, and also has class focused areas for hunters, warlocks, and titans. (Described as Earth's Camelot)

- Race and gender is cosmetic: Your face will be visible in shared, non-combat spaces where you roam w/o a helmet. You can therefore customize your face, hair style, and tattoos are mentioned.

- Choosing a class sets a tone by establishing style of abilities. What really determines how you play is how you develop your "Focus". Each type of guardian (Hunter, Warlock, and Titan) have a class-specific focus. "Focuses" are the primary way we level and improve characters. Each focus advances from level 1 - 20. Within each focus their are tiers from different abilities (passive bonuses, weapon specialty bonuses, grenade types, unique movements like double jump and teleport, melee bonuses). Each focus has a "Super Ability" associated with it that can also be upgraded

- We can switch between focuses i.e. pick a more competitive focus for pvp and the switch to a more support focus for cooperative raid work.

- Each of us gets a Lannister ghost, a customization personal vehicle (speeder bike) to travel in open-world environments, and a space ship that will be visible to people when you zip in and out, before cooperative and competitive matches hanging in orbit

Combat / Special abilities -

- The right bumper is a quick melee attack that is different for each focus

- The left bumper throws out a grenade also unique to your focus and recharges after a lil time

- Pressing the jump button twice to execute your focus' movement special (Glide, double jump, teleport)

- Pressing both left+right bumper activates the Super Ability (Damage, buff, heal, etc...)

Weapons and Armor -

- Weapons and armor can also improve stats and abilities. Bungie team decided to not take the route of incremental numerical differences and rather focused of more descriptive potential (like boosting speed, reducing headshot damage, enhancing a specific ability, speeding up health regeneration etc).

- Similar to focus, gear also has talent trees that gains exp through use. Four tiers of classifying gear: Basic (White), Common (green), Superior (Purple), And Gold (Exotic!)

- Everyone can use all guns (some will use certain things better though dependent on the focus/abilities they invest in). Armor is class specific.

The world (gamemodes,matchmaking etc) -

- Destiny‘s "events" are purely opt-in experiences. Players, if they so choose, can completely ignore them and go about their business, but those who choose to group with other online players will be justly rewarded.

- As one of those three classes, players can group together into what are called Fireteams and take on any number of missions. Fireteams consist of up to three players, grouped together like a clan. However, although Fireteams are limited to three players, events are not. Once a player encounters an event they might see other Fireteams pop into their game, helping even the odds against the enemy. This will all be seamless, no loading screens or lobbies

- Entering a public place (Solo/Fireteam) puts you in a unique server where others can join that specific battle.

- Can pull-up a screen game map that targets locations with icons for story missions, coop strikes, competitive matches, and more... Your ships will give you instant access to these locations.

- Strikes are cooperative missions that are relatively quick and team you up with others. Since they send you to other places you can chose to explore after the strike is done in the area that you are in.

- Raids are highly challenging cooperative story missions that are undertaken by organized groups against insurmountable odds.

Competitive Multiplayer (PVP) -

- According to the fiction of the Destiny universe, there are competing factions in the City that employ Guardians (aka players) to battle in contested areas across the solar system. The different factions are revealed to be integral in the development of and defense of the city.

- There will be a number of gametypes available in competitive multiplayer for Destiny with those mention including a Capture and Hold style match between two teams vying to control three points on the map. Holding a point grants a scoring multiplier for kills, assists and other actions. There's also a traditional team deathmatch gametype that rewards points for getting kills but also for reviving downed teammates before they respawn.

- Maps will have a lot of verticality (high ledges, buildings, etc...) that can be reached by movement specials of each Class. Shifting environmental features can be used to your advantage (Position of the sun glare, changing mechanisms that block paths or sight).

- Rewards/loot earned in co-op/Solo missions can be taken into PVP Multiplayer.

Mentions Dark Souls: Their inspirations are in the right places :yep2:

The core game sounds like Phantasty Star Online on Dreamcast without the Ninja looting. The factions sounds like what Lost Planet used for MP.

Oh and Thundar the Barbarian was one of my favorite cartoons as a kid. I remember having to wake up early on the weekends just to catch the weekly episodes.
