Crytek developing first ever Directx 10 game

Microsoft showed off the program as part of Jim Allchin's speech at the Professional Developers Conference here. Microsoft also showed an example of an application designed for clothing retailer The North Face.

"You just saw the future of Vista applications," said Allchin, the company's group vice president in charge of Windows.

Allchin began his talk by demonstrating a machine running the game "Reversi" running in Windows 1.0. He then showed off some Windows Vista-based graphics from game company Crytek. Crytek is planning a new game to debut simultaneously with Vista, Allchin said, although the images he showed were not of the game itself, but rather of sample graphics that included floating clouds and realistic face images.

I saw this video and the MS guy said this will be the first ever directx 10 game and said you will see visuals these next generations consoles cant even imagine. But MS blocked put a blue screen on the video because of copyright reasons.

what do you think

Instead of telling him what its not. How about telling him what it is? It would be more useful to the thread. It is commonly believed that WGF 2.0 is the mythical next revision of DirectX as far as feature sets go. While WGF 1.0 is the extension of DX 9.0 for longhorn. I seriously dont understand why its so hard to answer a question. Instead we're quiveling over a definition.

There is no DX10.

I found this REALLY cool site that actually says the API name *is* DX10. Maybe you have heard of it? It is called www.Beyond3d.com. Check this out from their home page:

B3D news from 28 July 2005 said:
ExtremeTech are reporting, though, that there is now a reversal in both of these facets – the new API will be called DirectX10 and it will ship with the initial release of Windows Vista. The report doesn’t indicate appear to detail any changes of functionality from our "DirectX Next" article, published over 18 months ago, still with the stipulation that there will be no Caps bits, a unified Vertex and Pixel Shader model and Geometry Shader functionality.

Now what were you saying about no DX10?

We all knew what he meant by "DX10" whether we call it DX10, WGF 2.0, etc... As Dave notes, "The next generation 3D API from Microsoft appears to have gone through an interesting cycle as to what it will be called and when it would appear" so expecting every single person to keep tabs on the new name of the month is kind of pointless. The fact you were not aware of the recent shift in naming is evidence of this.

Now back to the original topic... DX10 and a new CryTek game.

The article clearly states that the game is targeted to debut around the same time as Windows Vista (~ late 2006).

At best it will be a SM2.0+ game with an SM3.0 path like the UE3 engine.

MS chnaged the name to dx10 again so its not wgf2.0 anymore

Well then jokes is on me!!

So back on topic. I was hoping they would put out a Expansion to Farcry. Most top rated titles have already had one, if not two by now. Mods are nice, but I want more gameplay. And HDR built into the game settings, not commanded thru the console.

Back to the topic, its not DX10. But WGF 2.0. Or maybe not? I was just being nit-picky and having fun.

Well, that is why I pointed you back to the B3D website ;)

I tried to have fun with a lame sense of humor (a good sense of humor costs money and I don't have either) and give a reminder that 1. things change 2. none of us know everything, and....

3. Does ANYONE read the B3D homepage or do we ALL come right to the forum?

Dave posted news on this change over a month ago hahaha

It's almost a shame that what's in that Crytek video is ultimatly going to be filled with cheesy, tough guy, soldier boy B movieness with a terrible story and terrible characters where the aim is to run around and blow everybodies brains out. :)
