Crunch, Pop, Spray, Crack, Ooze, and NEXT-GEN!

Though you could argue about the story part... Chess doesn't have one, for example, neither does Formula 1 :) and Doom was the mother of all FPS without it as well.

Of course a good story can help to create a context for an action game and add weight and emotional impact; and RPGs, RTS games and such absolutely need one, too. It depends...

Doom had a story and a pretty original one for it's time. :p

It was running around shooting things that made it great.

Its gameplay that makes a game great. The clue's in the name ;)

I'm just saying that doom had a story thats it .

And Doom is certainly great, I still play Doom Multiplayer with my classmates every Friday.

It had open guts though

Blood is not needed to make the game great. Good story and gameplay is.

Dunchan,

The blood and gore will make the game go from great to FANTASTIC.

To me, playing a game as good looking as Heavenly Sword without realistic blood and gore would be like playing a cartoon. This is next gen. If I hit someone with a sword I don't want to see them bouncing back without a scratch on their flesh. I want to see blood spurt out, flash rip, and if I hit them hard enough limbs go flying off.

Also, if I'm playing Nariko I'm going to be fighting those individuals that KILLED MY FAMILY and clan. I don't want to just make them bounce about, but in the game I want to see blood flying.

I'm just glad it seems we will have blood in the game!

I'm going to be rude here by saying this , but that has to be the dumbest argument I've ever read. Blood and gore in "the" game isn't needed at all. I don't even see how you can argue how it would make the game "go from great to fantastic". That's just ridiculous...

I agree with you 50%, but imagine either Gears or God of war without the blood guts and core, they would still be excellent games that's for sure, but I think they would be less than what they are today. Babcat just takes things too far, but I don't think the opposite is true either.

let me correct myself, when I said "a game" I meant "the game". We're not talking about gears of war. I'm talking talking about heavenly sword specifically. adding blood to heavenly sword won't make the game go from great - fantastic like Babcat said. It honestly doesn't need it.

I agree, The amount of gore is basically irrelevant here. HS doesn't need gore nearly as much as the games I mentioned, it's kind of fantasy action adventure PG 13 type of game.

I'm not saying i would prefer the game with blood or anything, but looking at things from a different point of view, it seems rather strange that Sony would target a PG 13 rating, considering the demographics of PS3 buyers and owners. I expect the vast majority to be at least over 15, which means Sony shouldn't be worried about "losing customers" if the game is rated 15.
Not that it matters, a 10 year old is still more than able to buy 18-rated material anyway, at least here and in most of Europe.

Those who want more raw expression should request Gore Pack or something for online MOD purchase.

I gotta jump in on this one. I am just a reader, but this is starting to get a little crazy.
I am not a prude, but I do have children. I want to buy the console, but I need some games that my son can play as well. He is at the age where a little beat-em-up is ok but I don't want him to leave a trail of entrails and gore in his wake. We need more games that apeal to a wider range of gamers.
The console, in its present state dictates that older gamers with more disposable income will be the ones to purchase it, consequently families are in the mix for a lot of these people.

Ratings for games only makes sense thematically. E.g., if teh game is about murder, or about sex then it needs a mature rating because themes are very adult (if that makes any sense... i think of violence as childish, but hey). Anyway, the reasonable middle ground which i dont think costs too much in terms of development time or energy but can allow the developers artistic vision to shine through is to simple implement a violence toggle. If MS or Sony were to make this mandatory control on all of their games, that would be a win for parents, general consumers and them as corporation.

If every game has a toggle, then parents can view and lock games they buy for their children at a reasonable level of animated or graphic violence. The dev can make a game that is a horror fest that would please babcat, or a fanciful, fantasy implementation where enemies turn to pixiedust for folks like qroach.

SOme games already do this but making it implementatable either through a setting in the console or independently coding for each game is the way to go. HS absolutely does not need gore imho.

An OS setting would be smart. And age lockouts for different user accounts, in the case of PS3 that has them. Then Little Jonny logs into his account and can only run games at PEG13 or less, with Gore disabled. You could also have game with separate ratings for with gore and without, as long as it makes sense. HS could be 18 with Gore, 13 without, and on the younger accounts automatically swtiches it off.

Getting on side with the parents would be a Smart Moveâ„¢ for winning over hearts and minds.

X360 has parental controls that work this way in the OS.
so yes.... you are correct...it is a good idea.

Even the original xbox had the ability to do this, as well as 360.
