Nintendo with its partners probably did the most they've ever done to make programming games easy for 3rd parties. well i don't know how easy or not it was for Famicom/NES developers but certainly SNES and N64 were a mess. Gamecube was the most efficient of any of the last-gen consoles. I'd never even owned a 3 inch optical disc before I bought a Gamecube, even though 3 inch CDs have been around since the 80s. Resident Evil 4 was the highlight of Gamecube
(until Zelda comes out).
although it's doubtful that Gamecube will overtake Xbox1 in total worldwide sales, there's a good chance of them being even. a shared 2nd place
If you feel as positively as you do about the GC(as do I) why go and ruin a perfectly good feeling by worrying about popularity now. Who cares how popular the system was if you enjoyed it.
This whole poplarity contest is really bizarre in gaming. You know I buy alot of big ticket items, much more important to my life than a game console and have never once stopped to ask how many units they sold or how popular it is.
