could Gamecube end up 2nd place for last-gen ?

even though the sun is setting on Gamecube's lifecycle, I made this thread because Gamecube was the first Nintendo system I had almost total respect for. Nintendo with its partners probably did the most they've ever done to make programming games easy for 3rd parties. well i don't know how easy or not it was for Famicom/NES developers but certainly SNES and N64 were a mess. Gamecube was the most efficient of any of the last-gen consoles. I'd never even owned a 3 inch optical disc before I bought a Gamecube, even though 3 inch CDs have been around since the 80s. Resident Evil 4 was the highlight of Gamecube
(until Zelda comes out).

although it's doubtful that Gamecube will overtake Xbox1 in total worldwide sales, there's a good chance of them being even. a shared 2nd place :)

If you feel as positively as you do about the GC(as do I) why go and ruin a perfectly good feeling by worrying about popularity now. Who cares how popular the system was if you enjoyed it.
This whole poplarity contest is really bizarre in gaming. You know I buy alot of big ticket items, much more important to my life than a game console and have never once stopped to ask how many units they sold or how popular it is.

If the current difference is about 4 million in Xbox's favor, I don't see how getting another million will help them in the now-irrelevant race to second place - they'll still be behind by a couple of million.

Let's say that two men run 10k meters.

Runner A reaches finish line, but stops one meter shy from the line and waits one minute for the Runner B to arrive, let's Runner B cross the linr first and then walks the last meter. I would still know that the runner A was faster eventhough he gave up, and eventhough runner A was taking performance enhancing drugs( as in MS taking huge losses). It doesn't change the fact that A was faster.

BTW is Gamecube even outselling Xbox today?

edit: One sentence added.

The Gamecube finally outsold the Xbox starting in May for the first time since early 2003.

So far in the US they've managed to outsell the Xbox by a whopping 33,687 units. At that rate it would take them nearly 20 years to surpass the Xbox.

The cubefans will still be around then to claim the victory :devilish:

I imagine so. They still claim victory over the Sega Genesis, happily ignoring the fact that the only reason that happened was because the SNES was left on store shelves 2 years longer.

'~4M initial difference' / '~30K lead per month' = catch-up in ~11 years
so your 'nearly 20 years' is effectively 'nearly 100% error'.

good lord, powderkeg, you don't bother to spew remotely correct figures even when you consider purely hypothetical scenarios. but hey, at lest you're consistent!

ps: are you by any chance a marketing guy?

May to July is 2 months, not 1.

Good lord darkblu, can't you even count to 2?

1) may to july is 3 months.
2) the diffrence between GC and XB in june alone is ~30k* from Jap and US alone. and i'd venture to guess the cube held its own against the dead box back in eurolond.

see, i can count to two. you, though, still have to show you can output one correct number when it comes to a matters having to do with 'xbox superiority'.

ps: you did not answer my question (which was sincere, btw).

GCN - 51,000
XBX - 24,000

according to the data available on magicbox, gamecube sold 55000 more units than xbox since january 2006 in japan. and current sales of GC are abysmal.

does anyone have european figures BTW ?

maybe xbox did better than GC. everywhere i go (in france) i see that more space is dedicated to the old xbox than to the "current" GC. that should mean something.

anyway who cares if xbox or gamecube is second ? why does it matter ?

could we settle this by saying that given the supremacy of PS2, GC and xbox have an equivalent position: far behind it ?

it doesn't. a vocal member of this forum trumpetting fucked-up 'analysis numbers' with an shallow agenda does, though - it brings down the quality of this very board.

it obviously matters to you if you are bothering to argue with people about it....

qroach, read again what i wrote. it's certain trends in certain boards members' input that matters here, not whether the cube came 4th last gen, in whatever metric you like.

ps: i'm not in for the arguing, i just want to see more thought put in people's postings on these boards and less fanboism.

Are you quite positive about that? Because it appears to me that 1) You are incorrect, and 2) Even if you were correct it wouldn't materially impact the discussion.

So either you are arguing strictly out of fanboism, or you are arguing a tangential issue for the sole purpose of perpetuating the arguement.

Your post script seems to explain your actions exactly, not refute them.

yes, i know, that was in responce to qroach's comment on what matters and what does not to me. as whether i'm incorrect or not (though i just quoted some monthly figures and one elementary calculation based on them), this does not make the original powderkeg's 'prediction' any more valid. anyhow, i consider my part in this 'argument' done.
