Well, if the 5"x4"x1" dimensions are right it would be about a 6.25" screen (diagonally). Yeah, that would draw some power, unless it were an OLED display.

OLED...hmm, probably too expensive and I don't know if they have ones that large that don't (blue) fade quickly. That would certainly help with the power requirements but it seems Nintendo sticks with proven technology as it's easier to manage your risks.
With a 6" screen it'd be a shame to limit the device to just playing GC games. It'd be good as a portable video player. Feature wise it's a bit mad to offer something with less features than the DS at presumably more money because the components are more expensive. It'd just be a portable GC. Would anyone really buy that? Or would they add a flash card slot and go with the flow, creating a full-on portable media and entertainments device?

Honestly, so far the DS has many to replicate or exceed most of the game experiences Nintendo created on the GameCube, so I don't see so much reason for a GameCube portable anyway.
Mario Kart DS is better than Double Dash, though you can tell the hardware limited the complexity of the courses. But for the most part, the touch screen of the DS is far more important for enhancing Nintendo's games than more power would be.
