console sales figures for ...... Austria!

I though this was interesting as its from a country we usually never see sales figures from! First of all they're the first numbers I've seen from any European country besides UK (and once France) in a long time, but I also suspect the German market to show a similar behaviour (the two markets usually share many similarities) which makes the numbers even a bit more more interesting. According to www.gamesmarkt.de these are the december 2002 console sales for austria:

PS2 26.988
GBA 12.169
Xbox 6168
PS1 3465
NGC 1719

In Switzerland (Jan-September 2002), the PS One sold more then the X-Box and the Gamecube. ;)

PS2 177'000
PS One: 26'000
X-Box: 16'400 Stück
GC: 14'100

A friend at a game store has sent me the numbers, so I'm not sure if they are true. I tryd a search at google, but did not found anything.

Nice to see some numbers from my country. However I tend to disagree on the similarity of the two markets (Austria is more of a PS2 market, at least judging from my friend's consoles of choice).

You're probably right about Austria being even more of a PS2 country. Xbox market share amongst "next-gen consoles"appears to be slightly smaller than in Germany (~22% Germany vs. ~18% Austria) during the same sales period, while NGC seems to be performing worse than in Germany (wasn't it supposed to be at 10-15% there as opposed to the meager 5% in Austria?). Total PS2 ownage.

Hi hupfinsgack (what a nasty name :) ),

Agreed. This is the first time I've seen numbers from our country for this generation.
I too have the impression of Austria being a total PS2 market.
Maybe the fact that most of europes PS2 games are made at Sony DADC in Salzburg (I know many people who work there and each and everyone of them owns a PS2) helps a bit. :)

Where's Teasy? I kept hearing that the UK, Germany, and France weren't the whole of Europe and the other countries were probably different, but it looks the same to me. ;)

Lack of gamecube marketing causing that haemorrage or what?

There's definitely truth to that. There's no advertisment on the Austrian TV stations, only on the German channels (especially MTV Germany). No printed ads, since there are no major game mags in Austria and actually there's only one German multiplatform console mag. The rest of the printed console mags are mainly PS2.
Last but not least, the only gaming events / competitions are hosted by Sony or MS.

OT: hi mr, nice to see that I am not the only Austrian hanging out in this forum.

gamecube installed based is more important than MS one in france.

Interesting... I wasn't aware that PS2 is so much more popular here in Switzerland, at least not when speaking to various shop assistants (mainly PC-Joy Shops). I thought Xbox may have been closer than what those numbers lead to believe... I guess I was wrong. :D

So where you from in Switzerland? I was living in Zurich for a long time and am now living in the country side of the "Zürcher Oberland" (Bauma)

ive seen more Gamecube ads than XBox ads
(IMO the Xbox bundle with 3 Games for 249€ was just the best offer)

I live in Niederhasli (Zurich Airport Region) - The name of the suburb might bring back memories of the first Crossair crash that happened in Niederhasli.

BTW; does anyone have some recent sales numbers from Germany? Germany is quite a big market, might be interesting....

Afaik the XBox only started to sell better here after MS started to give away two and later on four free games with it - and that was after september 2002 iirc. Still it's no comparison to the PS2-madness. I was there the day Vice City was released - now that was just plain crazy ;)

On the other hand GCN mainly doesn't sell very well (anymore) because Nintendos distributor in Switzerland lacks the funds to compete in advertising with the likes of Sony and MS.

Yeah they were some spots on MTV, but there were a lot more PS2 / Xbox spots on TV. Additionally PS2 is major sponsor of Champions' League etc., Xbox is sponsoring a lot of snowboards events and the skiing worldchampionship, etc. Nintendo is doing nada.

I would say more lack of support, Nintendo is putting all of Europe Dead last in getting games, they just recently got ED, god knows when they will get Metroid.. right now there are really no games in Europe to make a GC worth owning.
