(DISCLAIMER: Very Silly Thread. Reading this might cause you permanent brain damage. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED)

I was having soooooo much fun reading the politics-related threads on here (yawny) that i thought i would just sum it up and bring the total level of human stupidity up with this thread. It actually has a very deep meaning...

Why is it that many expressions are intrinsecally sexist or racist?

Some examples:

"Set the record straight" or "Get it straight" - Why can't we set the record gay? or get it gay? Can't gay people set the record their own way?

"Being black with anger".... - Why black? Are black people on average angrier than the rest of us? Was there a study on this? Personally, i noticed the French are on average angrier than usual for some reason.

I had so many other expressions but i can't recall any of them now... anyone wanna help? :D

"Welshing on a debt" is bad enough... That you have just made me start auto-replacing "felching on a debt" has made me decide to hunt you down, pry your eyelids open, and make you watch Bio-Dome a few dozen times in a row! o_O

Wouldn't it be better if you simply beat the crap out of me with your gang of droogs rather than pry my eyelids open?

As if I didn't have enough need for Visine.

it's WELCHING , not welshing !!!

can't they spell in the valleys ;)

yeah, why do americans call homosexuals cigarrettes ?

*and* as for 'fanny bags' well thats just plain confusing :).

Why do the brittish call cigarettes fags?

That then brings up the often repeated... Go smoke a fag!

I could ask, why do the americans call gays "fags"... same thing... What came first, the egg or the chicken?

(This thread is going from bad to worse)

this should do for the uk reason...
http://www.wordpirates.com/index.cgi/F/fag.individual

basically it's coz the "fag end" was the coarse end of the piece of cloth . kids asking for bits of cigs would ask for the fag-end of the cigs when cadging for them...[ good old victorian values eh ;) ]....

dunno about the h-s usage though :-/ , though there is also the fact that public school slang for a young kid who looks after the older one is also called a fag.............

bah, only another couple of hours, then i can call it a day.... only bl**dy person in , and i havent even got any work to do :(......err which is of course why i'm web0skyvving ;)

Tell me about it, i'm doing f**k all...

AH! Found another one...

for UKers:

where does the expression "F**k all* come from? (For US guys, F**K all means "nothing"... as in "I'm doing F**k all" = "I'm doing absolutely nothing")

Take a break and smoke your fag.

-or-

Ask another man if you could smoke his fag?

"Excuse me... can I smoke your fag?"

Anti-smoker;

"Oh great, another fag smoker."
"Get away from me, you smell like a pack of fags'!"

USA gay tourist in brittish "red light" district to street vendor-
"Excuse me, how much do a pack of fags cost?"
Street vendor- "About 5 pounds."
Tourist thinking "Holy $hit, Im moving to England"

The brittish kill me. How could you not like the buffons.

hehehe

"F**k knows"...

"For f**k's sake" <--- that beats me, never got where it came from...

ByteMe, try substituting "smoke" with "have" in your examples

i dont get it ByteMe , whats wrong with all those phrases ;)

anyway, we used the word first ;) .

personally i'd say the us usage has come from the boarding school references...
this looks like a sensible text on it .

-dave-

"do you flog fags here" can be very confusing for a brit going to america..

[edit fags<>flags d'oh]

For you information...

The "Will they ban this idiot already" was a JOKE! It's in second place now behind KILER's option!!!

**everyone rushing to vote the "ban" option**

GUYS!!!

had this conversation when drunk with some wolfies (people from wolverhampton). they gave me a warning , never ever ask an american "can i bum a fag please" or "will you bum me a fag"......... which is perfectly acceptable ( if non-queens english) for "can i borrow a cigarette please"

-dave-

hmm , non-queens english.. i suppose i can't even say that now :(
