CeLL beating (by much) a 7800GT...

The guy ported a Cg code for raytracing a QJulia fractal quaternion to a 3,2GHz CeLL platform and using only 7 SPEs it managed to beat the poor G70's 20 pipes by factor of 5~6x.

The discussion seems to indicate that the shader running on the G70 was quite branchy - isn't G70 supposed to take an enormous performance hit on branches or something?

EDIT: There is already a good discussion of this "benchmark" in the "Console Technology" forum - "GPU vs CELL benchmarked".

Yes, it's supposed to take huge hit - so someone should go and test this with X1x00 instead

That IBM (?) guy is just being PR-a*shole... Jesus, guy keeps bragging how seven (in this case) general purpose 3,2 GHz cores beat a 400+ MHz graphics processor...

Depends whether you consider the 7800 GT to have 20 (25 if you count the VS hardware, although for the problem he's computing.....) general purpose 'cores' at 450MHz, or not. But still, I can see your point.
