Did the VWs score poorly in any of that? I checked such reports when I was shopping and never came across any reasons in any of that to count VW out. But by solidness I'm not talking about if it is a lemon or a death-trap; it has proved not to be the former, and though I hope I not to test the latter, the results I've seen aren't anything to cause me worry.Blitzkrieg said:Kyleb, thats quite funny that you mention solidness of your car as important, considering Subaru has higher quality marks than VW and also score above VW in crash testing(2nd only to Volvo AFAIK).
Well, even the WRX (turbo) has no known defects or whatever. Nothing breaks, nothing rattles, nothing creaks, nothing breaks down before it's supposed to be replaced. And they're probably driven more agressively, more often on dirt roads, etc. They're a pretty safe bet for a second hand car.kyleb said:Did the VWs score poorly in any of that? But anyway, by "solidness" I mean about things like how little everything rattles when driving down an unkept road and how smoothly the gearbox shifts. I'm talking about the basic kick the tires, tug on the trim, and go for a test drive stuff that I did at various dealerships when weighing my options; and that is the same stuff I aappreciate having together nicely over the years I have owned the car.
Yes, nice car. But even the cheapest one is more expensive than the Impreza 2.0R (half way to a WRX), although you get more accessories. And the cheapest sporty model is as expensive as a WRX, and less sporty._xxx_ said:What about Honda Accord?
Yeah I do know Subarus hold together well, and I also consider them to be one of the safer second hand choices. I've had family and friends who owned ones that have held together though more than any person could reasonably expect, and that is one of the reasons they wound up high on my list of new card options.DiGuru said:Well, even the WRX (turbo) has no known defects or whatever. Yeah, when I drove them I could feel the pins and such tumbling around during my shifts; not that gave me any pause as to how long the transmission would hold up, but all the same it just felt brittle. I do like the looks of the WRXs inside and out though, but then I'd take the ugliest care in the world if I could pick and choose everything else about the car to suit my tastes.DiGuru said:I think the only complaint about them is their looks. Exterior as well as interior. Although some people think the stick might shift a bit more smoothly.

Welcome to the subie club.DiGuru said:I can lease one after all. There was a slight misunderstanding, and they had looked at the WRX instead of the 2.0R. Which turns out to be exactly as expensive as the maximum lease amount, even while more expensive than the price bracket it should be in.
Fortunately, the current one has vastly improved on that. And I can compare, as I had an Impreza 1.6 as a lease car for a few years and drove the GT a few times. But the 1.6 is lacking, I really wanted some serious power to go with that great traction. Which I get with the 2.0R. Although still low-powered by US standards, it's in the upper five percent over here.JBark said:Take a large stick, and push it down into a bucket of rocks. Move the stick around, and now you know exactly how the Subaru 5MT feels.
Thanks! And I have a free WRX drive for a few hours from the dealer as a bonus. I wonder what I will like best in the long run?Welcome to the subie club.

That's how they come into being. Just come up with something that is superior to most of everything else in existence.nelg said:You mean cult.
