Building a new pc : ryzen 5 2600, gtx 1660 super, 2x8GB ddr4 3200mhz cl16

Can I hitch a ride on this thread since Orangpelupa, (Sorry if I play with your name, but i have the hardest time remembering it even though I know you and like you. Apologies, but that's also why I don't mind when people call me "Dig" or "Digi" or "Shitforbrains" or whatever. ;) ),inspired me to look in to if it was possible for me to upgrade my son's PC for xmas. My daughter's 20th birthday was today and she got cards with money from Gramma and Mom, so I have an idea of the budgetary range and I freaked out that I THINK I can just about do it for under $200us.

Just a CPU, mobo, and memory. His PSU is an insanely nice 1300w one, which he needs since he used to run a FX9590 and a 2x295. (The 9590 I fucked up the pins on, he's been using an 8350 for a while)

I checked out Microcenter, because of course, and I found this so far:

Ryzen 5 2600, $110usd
GeIL Evo Potenza 16GB 2 x 8GB DDR4-3200 PC4-25600 CL16 Desktop Memory Kit GAPR416GB3200C16ADC - Red, $55usd
ASRock B450 PRO4 AM4 ATX AMD Motherboard, $70usd

Total cost would be $253.13 with taxes and about 90 minutes of drive time. I think that's a better deal than I got on my upgrade, same mobo but slightly better memory and CPU!

Any thoughts?

Holy spit! They still have the Ryzen 5 1600 for $80! I could get it all for 223??!?

Is the 2600 worth $30 more?

EDITED BITS: Total would be $220.86 with the 1600.

EDITED BITS II: If I go with the Gigabyte B450M DS3H AM4 mATX instead of the Asrock it's only $191.96! UNDER $200!!!!! :D

Granted a micro ATX in a full tower case seems a bit daft, but it's definitely a great value! :D

Pffft, thanks Dav! I'm sticking to the under $200 build, I can sell my wife on it if it's under $200 and that's a damned fine system. Besides, I run my Ryzen 5 1600 with stock cooler at 3.9GHz 24/7 without any strain. It'll do until some of the better ones get dirt cheap and he needs more power I think.

I can't keep adding $30 here, $20 there..that's what I worked so hard to skim from it to make the price in range. Definitely working under a budget here, and if that means some hard choices then that means hard choices.

Besides, the upgrade from his 8350 will be mind blowing no matter which CPU. ;)

Thanks all, appreciated. I still am just in shock that I can get a full system upgrade for less than 2x8GB of DDR4 cost not all that long ago. :|

AMD Ryzen 5 1600 vs 2600

Talking 12nm and Zen+
https://www.anandtech.com/show/12625/amd-second-generation-ryzen-7-2700x-2700-ryzen-5-2600x-2600/2

As part of today’s launch, AMD has clarified what the move to 12LP has meant for the Ryzen 2000-series:

  1. Top Clock Speeds lifted by ~250 MHz (~6%)
  2. All-core overclocks around 4.2 GHz
  3. ~50 mV core voltage reduction

  • Cache latency adjustments leading to +3% IPC
  • Increased DRAM Frequency Support to DDR4-2933
  • Better voltage/frequency curves, leading to +10% performance overall
  • Better Boost Performance with Precision Boost 2
  • Better Thermal Response with XFR2
  • 13% Better L1 Latency (1.10ns vs 0.95ns)
  • 34% Better L2 Latency (4.6ns vs 3.0ns)
  • 16% Better L3 Latency (11.0ns vs 9.2ns)
  • 11% Better Memory Latency (74ns vs 66ns at DDR4-3200)
  • Increased DRAM Frequency Support (DDR4-2666 vs DDR4-2933)

Too bad you didn't jump earlier for Microcenter had some bad ass deals around Black Friday/Cyber week.

I picked up an AMD combo of:

Ryzen 7 2700X 3.7GHz 8 Core AM4 Boxed Processor with Wraith Prism Cooler for $129.99
B450M Pro4 AM4 mATX AMD Motherboard $49.99
Total of $179.98 + $14.85 tax = $194.83

I added in 8GB (2x 4GB) Team T-Force Vulvan DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Memory that I picked up for $39.99 last July when it was on a fire sale.

yeah get zen+

according to reddit posts i read, zen+ not only give better IPC but also better frame-time consistentcy

I'm not disagreeing with you,but everyone is thinking of it as "only $30 more for a 10% performance increase", which I get because 30 ain't a lot...but I see it more as "only 37.5% more monies for 10% performance improvements"

Not meaning to be disrespectful to anyone as I agree it could be a lot better for a little more, but my greatest joy was finding out how much I could improve his gaming experience and stay close to the $150 budget I'm sure I got, I can add $42 to that. Anything more is really going to be a hard sell to the wife, hell the 192 will be a hard sell with her but I think it is JUST at the price it needs to be for it to happen.

Question, do you think that the $192 upgrade would be worth it to upgrade his 8350? That's how I'm looking at it.

The problem is you can apply that line of thinking to nearly everything
in the pc.
only a bit more to go from bronze to gold psu
only a bit more to go from 550 watts to 750watts
only a bit more to get higher speed ram
only a bit more for another 2gb hdd capacity
only a bit more to go from sata to nvme
only a bit more for more cu's or cuda cores

Yup, exactly my point and thinking. Right now the lowest priced option really is the greatest value and I'm grateful I can get him that. :)

Digi if you get a ryzen gold edition you get a free Lisa Su sticker....
(thats not a joke btw)
Already got a hug from her and a picture with her, that's good enough for me. I bet I could get them to give me a sticker if I asked nice, now that Chris left AMD I don't feel like I'm betraying him by talking to them again so I was just thinking of hitting up some old friends there and thanking them for the joy their Ryzen 5 1600 and RX 580 had brought me that I bought with my own monies, and how I planned to do the same for my son. ;) LOL

I still can not just comprehend the enormity of the value of what $192us can buy, I just can't. I came across a post on facebook that was 3 years old that was about us upgrading his system for xmas and we got him an 8350 and mobo, and that cost us over $250 without memory!

This is a whole 'nother level of performance, it's a real gaming rig for under $200 and I find that a bloody wonderful and amazing thing. I don't think aiming for max value is cheap, I think it's the only logical approach to buying hardware on a tight budget and I've actually sort of found it to be fun after a few decades. :D

I'm thinking of doing a ryzen build
