Bought a gamecube

Well i'm just saying....

Dude, it's ok. :) Some people like new pretty games simply because they are shiny, and other people like any game that has good gameplay. I like both personally. :)

Heya, I actually like to play lots of old games so it's no big deal if it doesn't look as good. :) The first game we bought for the gamecube was sonic mega collection, which is a bunch of old sonic games for the genesis on one disc.

Okay, maybe it's my rhetoric that has all of us talking on different wavelengths -- and poor Digi running for cover! :( What I was talking about transcends graphics. It has more to do with a game's overall impact ... in the very long term.

classic - Widely used to describe a design that has transcended the taste and fashion of its time to take on a timeless quality. Design classics include the VW Beetle and the Macintosh iMac computer.

Sonic Mega Collection is what I would call a compilation of classics. Luigi's Mansion, Super Mario Sunshine and Wario World are not classics. Among other things, they are unlikely to be ported to other platforms unfettered. ;)

I'm actually now just a leetle bit excited about giving the new CD to my son, I'll get a chance to play the original Sonic again and I think it's been decades since I gave that a run! :D

Sonic 1 came out in 89.

Ah, but there in lies the rub....I'll play the game if'n I know the rules, but I hate playing when I don't know what is going on. ;)
Well, channel one into the other. Start off liking the ones that use ATi cards first, and move out from there. ;)

LOL In case you're curious there were Sega Master System and GameGear Sonics as well. The GameGear ones were good, haven't played the SMS ones so I dunno.

Well, Digi must be on the right track!! :D

"Everything in the system is connected to the chip we designed. The CPU talks to nothing else other than Flipper; the main memory talks to nothing else other than Flipper; the controllers talk only to Flipper; the disc drive talks directly to Flipper ... Beachspikers is the most fun ive ever had in multiplay.. and you can not go wrong with the monkey ball games.

I must admit that I did have meself a private little chuckle when my son opened up his Gamecube and I saw the little familar red and white "ATi" sticker on the front of it. :)

I think I'll start jumping into consoles next generation, HDTVs should be prevelant by then. (Well, if not prevalent then at least cheap enough for me to afford one. ;) )

Besides, next generation consoles and PC gaming I think are gonna come damned close to converging next round....if not they're going to be so close in gaming quality that it should be a moot point. (They may even be a little better at first, that's another good reason I might be trying 'em then. ;) )

That's normal, consoles are always better than PCs released at the same time, and they enjoy a luxury PC don't have (being closed platforms), but then PCs pick up and keep progressing, leaving consoles behind until the next gen comes along...

ah thanks!

Btw, have any of you guys bought the component cables for the gamecube? If so, how do the compare to the s-video one? We've got a 4:3 hdtv, so I could do 480p on it.

Thanks!
Nite_Hawk

I definitely recommend picking up the component cables since you have the hdtv to back them up. I just popped in Wind Waker and started playing through it again and was amazed anew with the graphics. The first time I played it though was on an old economy line 19 inch panasonic through the standard connection and this time on my newish 25 Panasonic (non HD) Tau. I'm sure a lot of the improvement is just the better television, but the vibrancy of the colors... a lot of it has to be the component cables.

Hey Pepto, for me it isn't all about the graphics. I only really notice how great, or how bad they are for the first five minutes of playing. Gameplay, Control, and Story are much more important, at least to me.

I guess that's why Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake (MSX) has been my favorite game for the past five years. :)

the SMS and gamegear were really similar weren't they? Wasn't the gamegear essentially mini-SMS?

Nite_Hawk

There were two differences, IIRC. The SMS had a higher res but a smaller pallete. I think the GG might have been able to use bigger and/or more sprites, but I cannot remember. I know I got into a debate with Fox5 once about it. Edit: http://www.beyond3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=10937&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=100 Scroll down to the bottom of the page. It has info on the SMS, GG and the GBC. o_O

What attracts most people to older games aren't particulars (like graphics or control or the storyline), they're aggregates.

Classic titles have a knack for this sort of presentation, which is why, when most of you talk about older favorites, you're almost always talking about classics. ;)
