Bought a gamecube

Well, it sounds like Metroid Prime and SMS are pretty common choices. :)

Digi: The sonic collection is pretty good. It's actually the reason why my wife wanted to buy a gamecube in the first place (she was addicted to sonic when she was a teenager on the genesis). Now that she is playing them again though, she's getting rather bored! :?

Atleast she's been really getting into the wind waker. I'm really glad I decided to pick it up, as she's a lot more addicted to that than the sonic collection. Go firgure!

How is the sonic heros game? Think she would like that better than the old school ones? Also, is there any way to play all the original Super Mario Bros games on the gamecube? (And maybe the old zelda games?)

There isn't any Mario compilation available on the gamecube, most likely because most of the mario games have been rereleased with a few additional upgrades over the SNES Mario All-Stars game. However you can get a compilation with several of the Zelda games. Nintendo had a special promotion last Christmas where you could get a bonus disk that had zelda, zelda 2, the two N64 Zeldas and a preview of windwaker. You might be able to pick it up at a second hand video game place or ebay. Just do a search for, " The Legend of Zelda Collector's Edition"

OICspork:

ah thanks!

Btw, have any of you guys bought the component cables for the gamecube? If so, how do the compare to the s-video one? We've got a 4:3 hdtv, so I could do 480p on it.

Thanks!

My son is nuts about Sonic Heroes, but I haven't checked it out yet...I tend to hate playing games on a TV, the huge pixel size just drives me nuts! (Hell, I have a hard time watching TV on a regular TV anymore....those huge pixels just jump out at me. :( )

Is there a gamecube adapter to plug it into a cigarette lighter? I was going to just get a power inverter, but if there's a cheap cord that might be easier.

Digi:

I'm sure there probably is. There seem to be a lot of accessories for the gamecube (They had one at best buy to turn the thing into a portable device witha 5" lcd screen!).

I don't mind the large pixel size so much because I'm used to playing a lot of older games like x-com and wing commander and you get used to the high pixel size. ;)

Super Mario Sunshine ... are you kidding me?! After playing The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, older generation software is going to seem like just that: old!

Unless the game is a bona fide classic (and SMS is no classic), I'd suggest that you try to stay within the same software generation -- i.e., buy one of last year's critically acclaimed titles.

Mario Kart: Double Dash
The Sims: Bustin' Out *
Viewtiful Joe

* Your better half will probably like this one.

Wow, so u're telling him to completely ignore all the other excellent games released the generation before this one just because they might not look as good? :?

And I believe this is the point where I go and hide from this forum whilst it still leaves a good taste in me mouth....

Well ... yeah.

After playing a spectacular current generation title, an older one won't be the same -- unless, of course, it's a classic.

For PS2 owners this would be like playing Ratchet and Clank: Going Commando and then buying the the original Jack and Daxter, expecting it to provide the same utility simply because the ratings say it should.

Ratings are very time and technologically dependent. What was riveting yesterday may not be today. In other words, both consumer expectations and the art & science of game-making is evolving... ;)

Did you have some sort of traumatic experience with a console forum when you were a child? :)

They scare the bejesus out of me!

I've never really looked at Beyond3D's as me experiences elsewhere had already pretty well traumatized me, so please don't think any of me consforphobia was caused by all you fine people.

Console forums just seemed to be filled with two kinds of people to me; people who knew way more about consoles than I will ever hope to know and want to rub me nose in it and people who knew damn near nothing about nothing but THOUGHT they knew way more about consoles than I will ever hope to know and want to rub me nose in it.

I don't like having me nose rubbed in things, I react badly to that. ;)

But console also have what I would have to politely call the most enthusiastically and blindly loyal fan followings and whilst I'm never really one to back away from a discussion/argument/fight there is a difference between engaging in a civilized flame war and the shit that goes down when a couple of dozen hundred fanboys of different flavors/intelligence/writing abilities all seem to go insane at once and it is just a wee bit too much for me to handle!

Well, that and I don't really play consoles at all since I got back into PCs in the 90s. I think the last console I was really into was the Genesis. (And I loved me Genesis, I was insane with it...too many good memories of them 24-36 hour sessions of PGA Tour with 2-3 friends of mine. 8) )

You really have to get Pikmin, your wife and kid will love it! The Pikmins are the cutest little buggers ever! :D

Heya, I actually like to play lots of old games so it's no big deal if it doesn't look as good. :) The first game we bought for the gamecube was sonic mega collection, which is a bunch of old sonic games for the genesis on one disc.

Luckily, my wife already knows about the sims and doesn't want it. She'd rather go camping or something in real life instead. :)

I'm actually now just a leetle bit excited about giving the new CD to my son, I'll get a chance to play the original Sonic again and I think it's been decades since I gave that a run! :D

Frankly, dig, I think "hiding" from here but still wading hip-deep into the ATi/nVidia turf war is a bit... I dunno... silly? I guess you're more used to it, but frankly it ALL gets scary! :p

*grrrrr....* Yeah, I'm broke too... I would have bought one long ago if I had the money.... a GC is sooo tempting, really. Oh well, maybe in august. I want Metroid Prime... oh and Resident Evil too (All of them!!!). Oh and Mario Tennis too.

ATi/nVidia I know a bit about though, consoles I'm pretty clueless.

Well, i'm sorry to say, that is one of the most ridiculous things i've read in a long time.
If everyone were like you, the console market would have collapsed a long time ago.
If one were to buy the first J&D, after playing JAK2, of course he would not expect the same level of polish, he would buy it to PLAY THE GAME. Fortunately not everyone buys games based on IGN's score, based on how many polygons the game pushes, on how many raindrops you can see on screen.
I've played ICO LOOOOOOOOOONG after buying games that are obviously much more technically advanced on pure paper-specs. I've played Vagrant Story LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG after playing games that are on another planet in terms of technicalities.
If i were to ignore EVERYTHING before this last generation of software for this last generation of hardware, what would i have left?

Sorry to attack you, i don't mean to sound angry or anything, but sometimes i wish people would just play the freaking games, without any next-gen-super-advance-graphics-shiny-shine-fps-inverse-kinematics bullshit.

london-boy, Pepto-Bismol:

You two! Opposite corners now! o_O

Really, it's nothing to get all worked up about. This should be the most laid back topic around here, really... :)

come on, say it after me... M E L L O W.....

<now imagine listening to low-rider in the background>
