Borderlands 2 [PS3, X360]

I don't have an issue with the level cap. It means you have to think about how you build your character. Borderlands 1 was ruined by raising the level cap to 70. Characters became unbalanced with sirens being absurdly overpowered. Instead of having a mix of characters in co-op games you end up plaing four sirens.

What I do have issue with, is the rock-paper-scissor combat of elemental attacks. You basically need to carry shields, mods and artifacts to face each type of elemental attack otherwise baddies will one-shot you as BZB points out. Having to manually swap items before badass, semi-boss and boss encounters is a PITA and aggravated by the limited inventory. I currently have three guns, three shields, two different artifacts and two different grenade mods in my inventory on top of the equipped kit.

That shit is just broken.

Another issue is the over-reliance on the Fight For Your Life mechanic. Getting one or two shotted and then having to kill the baddie is used way too much, - and really annoying when you are hit by a missile attack a fraction of a second after killing the only baddie left.

Oh, and rat-people (thieves especially).

Overall I enjoyed Borderlands a lot more. It's a smaller game with a lame ending, but the gameplay mechanics work better and the atmosphere is much better (MM2: Road Warrior ! )

Cheers

Pitchford's comment about "breaking the game" seems weird to me. It's a single player, PvE game. Who cares if raising the level cap breaks it? Let the friggin players feel uber powerful for christ's sake.

Meh. No more $$ from me, Gearbox.

That is the lamest excuse I have ever heard. Booo! The only sensation of this game stems from upgrading your character and getting better. I agree with NRP: let me get overpowered as much as I want, it is a single player for christs sake! Let me max my character...baaa, it was a failure to buy the season pass for the dlc...I expected a lvl raise...lesson learned for BL3.

How do you guys hit the level cap so fast?!? I've played about 40 hours and I'm only level 26.

Do all the side quests as they come up, before moving on to the main story quests. Kill a lot of stuff. Go after higher level enemies. Use artefacts that increase your experience gain.

If you're a completionist, or you keep playing the combat arenas over and over because you're not really up to the correct level, or you're the sort of person that searches every level and kills every enemy, then it's doable to hit the level cap not very far into your second playthrough.

I wont be playing BL2 until the next DLC hits. The third DLC Sir Hammerlock's was horrible. If they don't up the level cap I'll be playing DLC #4 in play-through 1 mode with my level 50 character to see how the story is.

This is a real shame, especially when you consider the bullshit game mechanics in TVHM when the mobs can drop your shields in 1 hit regardless of the buff. I'm also getting tired of carrying around multiple weapons where the only difference is the elemental effect for those mobs who are immune to certain attacks.

Level cap is going up at some point...

So we’re in the middle of that. That’s the world we’re living in right now. We’re excited about the goal, both as gamers and as creators. But … I mean, I’m not gonna lie. It’s a big challenge. It’s a big undertaking. It’s not going to just turn on. It’s a thing we have to work ourselves through.

And the last statement from that interview...

It’s tricky. But we’re committed to it. But yeah, I think that’s a fair expectation, given Borderlands 1.

But it's going to take a lot of work and effort. And they are going to try to not let it break things too much like it did with Borderlands 1.

But chances are, it'll break something somewhere. I have yet to see a game increase level cap without breaking something and introducing some exploit that people could use. At least this isn't an MMO or competitive game, though. So the damage is just limited to people willing to exploit it rather than impacting on other people's gameplay as well.

SB

What they should have done was have a higher level cap in the first place, and design the second playthrough to scale with that. Kingdoms of Amalur and Torchlight have more than a 100 levels, and they worked fine with their second playthroughs/DLC and overpowered characters.

To get to this point and then say "Gee, we painted ourselves into a corner even though we knew we'd be raising the level cap" just seems like nonsense. Gearbox are saying they planned for a level cap, planned to raise it, but then designed the game as if the first two things were not going to happen.

They should have spent less time polishing the turd that was Duke Nukem and more time sorting their flagship product.

Randy Pitchford has once again confirmed on twitter that there will be a level cap raise. But he also says there is 50% chance that there will be unforseen consequences people won't be happy with.

That makes me wonder since they can't raise the cap in the same way they did in BL1, if anyone will be happy with the way they do it in BL2.

BL2 levels up everything exponentially, so enemies are going to kill you even faster, and your good weapons will become useless even faster. And was already pretty bad just going from level 40 to 50 if you ask me.

This.

Guns is obsoleted in 4-6 levels in BL2. In BL 1 you live with the same Volcano sniper for 20+ levels.

Grinding for equipment in BL 2 before reaching level 50 is pointless.

I actually farmed the BL2 Volcano sniper rifle yesterday. I heard it wasn't nearly as good as the BL1 Volcano, but I wanted anyway because it was the only legendary Warrior drop I didn't have. And now that I've tried I have to agree that it's pretty weak for a legendary. I much prefer my level 45 Longbow for a fire sniper.

Maya is fast becoming my favourite character after Salvador. I can pick up those annoying Rabid Stalker's and blast them to bits. I can do a ton of fire or corrosive damage if I want to. And best of all, with the Rough Rider shield and a lot of points into Fleet, I can constantly run around on the battlefield at incredible speeds. Playing without it now feels sluggish.

I love my Pitchfork. It's devastating on slagged enemies. Expensive on ammo though.

I have only played as Maya, use Ruin+Converge skills to gather large groups and slag them, then pile fire and explosives on them.

The Pitchfork is awesome, as is the Lyuda. Both spend a lot of ammo. That's why I've given them to my Gunzerker.

That's a combination I've use for quite some time. But with the Rough Rider I need all the healing I can get from the middle skill tree. So now I use Scorn+Converge to achieve a similar effect. Although it's not as good as Ruin.

Haven't bought any of the DLC (and won't), I'm coping fine with level 10 sweet release ATM.

The article is wrong. The level increase and the new Ultimate True Vault Hunt Mode are free. The skill points for the extra levels, and the pearl weapons aren't free. Which is still kind of weird.

Looks like I'm back to playing Borderlands 2 this weekend.

This really sounds awesome if it's done right:

If that's not enough to wet your whistle, consider this: despite the fact there are no additional characters this time around, there's an expansive selection of enemies and campaign-specific weapons. They're not simply re-skinned skags and the like – they're orcs, golems, gnomes, and knights out for blood. You'll gun them down with magical spells and armaments that shoot swords or even exude drunkenness (say hello to The Grognozzle and Swordsplosion).
