Blue isn't blue anymore? Different browsers show image colors differently?

I'm making for fun of it a small page for myself, which uses #0065a4 as main background color, so naturally the buttons have the same background color aswell.

But depending on browser, it isn't necessarily the same after all, example:
browsers-color.png

The link buttons are stored as .pngs, and IE9, Chrome and Opera seem to show them like they should, but Safari shows #1c61a1 instead of #0065a4, and Firefox #0c5c9f.

What on earth could cause this, and how could it be prevented?

What is the result of http://www.color.org/version4html.xalter in the different browers?

For me, IE and Chrome both display the "The system does not support these ICC profiles " version, with firefox displaying the "The system supports ICC version 2 profiles only". I don't know what Safari does.

There is also a reference to "colour indexing" for PNG files. I don't know if this would also contribute to the issue.

Interesting, for me IE9 shows the "supports all" image, on my machine:
IE9: The system supports these ICC version 4 and version 2 profiles
FF5: The system supports ICC version 2 profiles only
Safari: The system supports ICC version 2 profiles only
Chrome: The system does not support these ICC profiles
Opera: The system does not support these ICC profiles
(Installed FF5 beta to test if it's sorted out since FF4, but it's the same, some other users report that it displays normally on their FF)

the page in question:

(yes, I know, it would never pass validator tests I'm sure)

It's true. I have to use IE9 because it's the only browser that renders colors correctly for me (my monitor's profile is v4 so firefox 3.5+ does not work but firefox 3.0.x does work).

Out of curiosity, what monitor is this?

nec 2690wuxi...I have heard a lot of Dell monitors (that have a higher color gamut than SRGB) also come with v4 profiles. Obviously if you own the right software/hardware you can create your own profile for the monitor (in v2). The profile will probably even be better than the one nec/dell/etc provide too. I don't have access to that hardware/software though. :p
