I don't know if anyone has already posted this but it sounds interesting.

In short, the Blu-Ray disc players were seriously sexy pieces of kit. They looked like the business. The technology is fantastic. The useability and feature set extensive. And it records. Are we going to see this in PS3? The Sony R+D manager at the booth indicated that it was the front runner internally. A creator'a pride, or wishful thinking? After seeing it first hand, we think Sony should give it serious consideration.

The full article can be found here.

This is by no mean proof that ps3 will use blu-ray or not, but I find it interesting that Sony is even thinking about putting it in there.

CONFIRMED OR NOT,
whether u guys are too afraid to admit it or not....
i'm SURE blue ray will be in PS3.
absolutely sure. it might be a streamlined-not-high-end part, but it WILL be there.

Same here, I am about 75% sure that blu-ray will be in the ps3, I just hope that blu-ray catches on before the ps3 is released.

Does the Blu Ray PS3 implementation imply a no-no for CD/DVD support?

I mean, is it possible for a Blu Ray reader to read also CDs and DVDs?

Yes, blu-ray recorders will play cd/dvds but it is not required of them.

Last 3-4 gen of console have featured new/better/bigger media formats each time....this time also same thing is going to happen!!

Last 3-4 generations of consoles NEEDED a bigger format. That is not the case now. I don't buy the "just because it happened before it will happen now" argument. They were motivated by concrete needs to expand the storage format. DVD is big enough to handle any concievable game likely to be made within the next generation. Unless I'm missing something and blue-ray is cheaper to produce than DVD it isn't going to happen.

BluRay would replace the need for having a hard drive in a console.
Even memory cards would no longer be needed, as game saves (and user created maps etc.) would be saved on the same disc as the game itself.

Problems would be if one wants to use for example ripped music, as there is no common hd database, you'd have to save the same song to each BluRay gamedisc you want to play them with.

when the ps2 was in early talks, no way it would have a DVD drive and it was 6 months from release. Coming september and the complete spec release, we got a 4x DVD.

I'm sure Blue Ray (in some sort) will be in ps3.

If "Cell" reaches its speculated 1Tflops target, it would be a LONG while before PCs catched up to that. Likewise when it comes to the graphics part I suppose, if Sony does a GS-like part with massive on-chip framebuffer bandwidth and fillrate.

As for harddrive or not, we can pretty much assume there WILL be a harddrive, not only aren't they very costly to begin with, blu-ray discs might not have enough free space to store much on, besides, will ALL blu-ray drives be rewriteable? I don't think so! I also would think write speed especially would be pretty damn slow in comparison to a harddrive.

*G*

yeah it would be cool to save games on hard drive and be able to eventually "transfer" the saved games onto the game disc itself so u can take it to friends or whatever without the need to use memory cards. the saved games would be on the game disc itself.

saves would be first stored onto hard drive for speed, then if the player wants to go round some friends house and play Gran Turismo 7 maintaining all his saves, all he needs to do is "download" the saves from hard drive to the game disc and there u go, u have a personalised Gran Turismo 7 disc with all the cars he won and all his credits... no need to carry the game and the memory card and whatever else....

ahhh i should get paid for these ideas...

Blu-Ray is a format that specifies Re-Writeability... designed for HD Movies AND recording at HD resolutions from the TV or other streams.

You have Read Only Blu-Ray discs, but the specifications for the drive position it as the digital VCR for the HDTV era.

I do not think we would have a Blu-Ray player without an even "lite" Re-Writeability feature... talk about castrating a format.

In mid 2003, you can find fully Re-Writeable 25 GB Blu-Ray discs for $30 and we are more than 2 years and a half from PlayStation 3's launch... and by that time there should not be a huge price problem for Blu-Ray discs and devices.

I would rather have a Blu-Ray player than an HDD based TiVo: I like infinite storage :)

It does not make sense putting a huge HDD to which you have to depend on if you have Blu-Ray: HDD breaks == your data is likely lost... Blu-Ray player breaks == your data is not lost.

It could be preferrable having a small HDD to sit next to the Blu-Ray player as it could sit a s a buffer for Blu-Ray and between Blu-Ray and external RAM of PlayStation 3...

Still I would not be disappointed if they only had Blu-Ray and some cheap RAM to act as a buffer...

Blu-Ray would serve most functions you would use an HDD for: permanent storage, game saves ( you can carry them around ), patches, updates, etc...
an be done otherwise...

No HDD == no need for the controller, less moving parts ( higher reliability ), etc... == cheaper over-all system.

Blu-Ray's 1x speed for Re-Writing is up to 36 Mbps... not too bad ;)

blue ray being in the cell will come down to price. Thats all. If it wont drive prices up that high it will be in there. If its to expensive thats it a dvd player will be in it.

Sony needs a vehicle to push Blu-Ray in the consumer electronics market coverign the low-end segment without making it seem that Blu-Ray is hitting the bargain bin so to speak.

PlayStation 3 also needs the Blu-Ray's hype and the added functionality to add perceived value... Kutaragi is also the head of the "Blu-Ray promoting group" basically so he will be interested in its success...

PlayStation 3 is the perfect vehicle for Blu-Ray to shine and having it in PlayStation 3 would be really a good idea for consumers :)

Not to mention, if PS3 games were BluRay, it'd do a nice job of curbing piracy ( I figure by 2005/6 DVD recorders will be quite mainstream).

I don't see how PS3 could not use Blu-ray.

If not Blu-ray than what? DVD's just will not cut it for PS3 games, what else is there?

But wait, Blu-ray would fit PS3's space requirement needs fine, *can* double over as a HDD, and it would give the medium the push it needs much like how DVD was used in PS2.

Why won't DVD be enough? Last I checked there weren't any games pushing the limits of DVD. At this point in time in the PS generation you had numerous games pushing 3 or 4 discs, (PC games like Phantasmagoria pushed up to 7!!!). Pretty much anything that comes out on more than one DVD is done purely for show, (special edition movies, anyone?). Most DC or GC games fit on less than 1gb of space. So why is it that DVD, which no matter how much Blue Ray comes down in price is going to be much cheaper, is going to be inadequate?

I remember putting MGS2 in my DVD drive a while ago and it filled up just about the entire 4.9GB. Even Kojami said they were nearing the limits of the DVD for MGS2.

Not to mention PS3 games are going to be huge in size basically, all that texture storage. And if PS2 games come close to filling a DVD.. PS3 games fitting on a DVD will be a chance happening.

That's why they have dual layered and dual sided DVD's. I believe dual layer fits close to 9 GB and dual layered/dual sided is 17GB.
