Best speaker system for gaming..

Sariden

Newcomer
Well, I'm getting ready to build a complete new system.. And I really know nothing about speaker quality.. after reading some reviews and going over products at newegg, I'm thinking about the Logitech z-680's. But, before I get anything, I figured I'd see if anyone had a better suggestion :p.

Thanks.

It always depends on the system, and your needs, if you can integrate the PC into the home audio solution it would be pretty fly, then you would only have to buy one set of stuff. I plan on doing that one day...

I'm not looking for say.. a bose home theatre system, but I don't just want a simple two speaker set up either... just something in between that offers the best 3d gaming within a [fairly] small room.. and provides high quality sound for watchin dvd's.. I realize the question is subjective, I'd just apprecaite some oppinions.

I have to say I'm quite happy with my Cambridge SoundWorks DTT3500 Digital, as it has lots of inputs (and all the necessary cables), works well with my Audigy (digital 5.1 connection from soundcard to amp), packs enough punch for my room and was rather cheap.
I've never had to go over the half-way mark with the volume knob... ;)

good for you

if it's got no "highs" and got no "lows"... it must be BOSE!

just throwing in another PC based alternative for you - can't comment myself

if it's only a small room you don't want any hoofing great speaker system as they'll sound flat if they're not even running warm

also, in a small, hard-walled room combat 'holes' appearing in your sound by trying not to have any of the speakers directly facing an opposite wall:
Google search on "standing waves" - http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q="standing+waves"

what about a Klipsch setup? quite expensive but god damn are they nice to listen to.

How much are you thinking of spending?

No more than 400 us.

How many channels does your soundcard support?

Audigy 2 ZS. So, 8 channels according to creative.

what about a Klipsch setup?

Yes, I'd looked quite a bit at their systems, and a great deal of the feedback I read dealt with them dying and having to be RMA'd in under a year, so I'm a bit leery about buying from them.

Excellent, thank you :!:

Well that's a good start.

Yes.

Old post of mine here....

Hello All,

$50 a pair

I just bought (2) 3-way Yamaha speakers (8" woofer) shipped for $50. I got the 2 in, then I bought 4 more for my 'puter sound system (5.1 Dolby) with my new Audigy 2 ZS ($93 BAH $86 now). The sound card can handle 7.1 but my receiver can only handle 5.1 and those speakers are not well suited for side channels anywho. The Audigy sped up my 3D games WAY more than I thought possible. I always enable 3D sound, but I didn't know that the Sound Blaster Live 5.1! took such a large performance hit in frame rate. The speakers are a bit large (10.5" x 12" x 16") for the computer, but I will make do. They don't output as much bass as I hoped (some 8" woofers can output quite nice bass at low db). That is ok I guess, I will let my Phase Coupled Activator from Audio Control (like the car Epicenter only for the home) and my 15" sub handle the bass. =)

If you are lookin for a sound card, faster 3D sound, or some cheap decent speakers you might want to give these a shot.

At $50 a pair, I got 3 pair but am only using 5 speakers (for 5.1). I don't have room in to put those speakers on my sides, but that is ok. They really aren't the best speakers for side channel anyway (they should be dipole for side speakers (firing both front and back)). The only thing is that these speakers are a bit on the large side for desktop use. I will be mounting them on the walls to get them out of the way.

Then get a Home Theater 5.1 receiver and you are all set! (kinda expensive at Crutchfield, but you can get an idea what there is out there).

The only thing you will lack is a sub. So far you spent 3 x $50 (speaker pair) + $150 5.1 receiver = $300. You can get an aftermarket sub for $100 easy (or you could make your own as I did for much cheaper and/or much more base).

Sony SA-WM200 Powered Subwoofer $99
Bass-reflex design • frequency response 28-200 Hz • 80-watt amplifier • front-firing 8" woofer • video-shielded

This setup will be much larger than normal "computer" speakers but it will deliver sound that is far superior (at louder listening levels). Need more info, just ask.

I just got a nice kenwood speaker system at circuit city. It was on sale(I think the sale is over by now), I think normal price was like $420, I got it for $300, plus got a $30 gift card, and a $30 rebate on top of all that, and it has 5 speakers and 1 subwoofer, is 600 watts(I think the subwoofer has its own 100 watts seperate from that, but I'm not sure), supports dolby pro logic 2 and dolby digtal, and dts. I currently have my gamecube, pc, and tv(my tv has audio/video out on it) and the system came with a built in am/fm radio. It sounds good for gamecube(depends on the game, I tend to set it for dolby pro logic 2 music mode as most games have more music than sounds...which sucks, very few gamecube games seem to actually offer anything than music in terms of pro logic 2 support, the star wars games are very good exceptions though), it sounds good for music(depending on the source, but even crappy music and gameboy music over gameboy player sound much better), for pc games it is ok, my sound card only supports EAX but that doesn't even get pro logic support, and pc games usually don't rely on a soundtrack as much as console games, so they are rather blah.

The system I have is a VR-705, at least htat is what the box is called, not sure what the model number is of the entire set.
