Battlefield 3 announced

Turns out depth isn't mission dependent, it's vehicle dependent. I'd only been online on infantry servers before, but now I've tried 3D in a chopper and a jet and the depth is very low indeed. As soon as I leap out it's back to normal. Can't say I'm a fan, but without seeing the alternative it's hard to know if it isnt helping to hide some problems.

I'm using a Senn PC350 which IIRC is basically the 280's with a mic added. Works great. I also have the PC360's which are great too, if you prefer an open design (more sound in/out - people around can hear it softly).

I bought the game yesterday on the black Friday sale, accidentally parachuted the boxed version instead of the download, and had to talk to tech support to get that worked out. Then I after I got it downloaded I had to talk to them again to get logged into Battlenet, and another five times before I could get the game to log into EA so I could play multiplayer. this is a bit of one of my conversations with tech support:

LoL!
"Have you, or have you not, dated Battlefield 3?"

And great that they first ask you to do complete uninstall/install cycle before trying to update PB.

Not that there's any reason to suspect PB was causing the "Game could not login to EA Online (1)." error I was getting anyway. But worse than that, she didn't even mention the "repair install" option, which surely has the same effect as uninstall/reinstall without wasting 11.4GB of bandwidth. Of course the problem was on their end all along, I just had to keep pestering them until I got a tech support rep who was competent enough to fix it.

Thanks Andrew. I ended up getting a zalman clip on mic for the 280's since I couldn't find a BF deal for the 350/360's. Hopefully it works well.

I had a similar experience with a Lenovo sales rep when I asked him what kind of SSD the laptop came with. The furthest I got was him sending me a link to the wikipedia page for SSDs.

Cool, yeah that should work well. We should test it out by playing sometime :) So when do you guys all play? Anyone be interested in arranging an evening or weekend time where a pile of us try to get online and play together? It's neat being in the same platoon and all but I seem to play at different times than most of you...

Saturday night is usually my late one, I tend to be heading off to bed around 1am. (UTC+1). Know quite a few NA players who join us in their afternoon times at the weekends. Sunday at around 9pm (again UTC+1) seems to be a good time for getting the EU + NA gang together for the TOG clan. Quite a few B3Ders with us now actually. Good to chat to some of you on TS! The doors are always open to the rest of you... :p

This is simply ridiculous. I installed the new NV driver (290.36) and I am literally getting double the FPS that I was. Literally. I can play on all High settings sans terrain detail and MSAA with my GTX260. This is at 1440x900 but still. I am getting >45FPS most of the time!

Something must have been messed up with my system before. Never have I seen such a dramatic improvement from a simple driver update.

It seems they have also fixed the random triangular artifacts that I was occasionally seeing before. Although perhaps I have yet to run into the problem.

My heli flying friend plays BF3 on the PS3 and he phoned me and angrily told me about jets being able to crash into helis in the air while using the afterburner and the heli explodes and the jet lives.

Anyone tried this on the PC?

Sounds like lag to me. I've seen lots of mid-air collisions and in every one all of the participants die ;) The only oddity is that the heli pilot will often get a team-kill against his gunner, which makes no sense.
My friend said it was reproducable and only the heli riders died, jet survived.

I need your help gentlemen.

My 360 controller does not work on the PC version of Battlefield 3 whatsoever. I have all the drivers installed, Windows recognizes it and I use it to play Just Cause 2, Skyrim, Fallout:NV and many other games.. I have spent dozens of hours doing so.

But in my time of need (piloting vehicles) my controller just does not exist to Battlefield 3 at all. I mine as well be waving my arms trying to get it to do something.

Any help? At all?

I've had this SAME problem (with a different wired controller) in the Alpha and Beta. People reported that they were using controllers on it just fine. It was like any other game- plug and play. Couldnt' get it to work.. I was thinking maybe this was because it was the Alpha\Beta so I paid little mind to it.

Now, clearly, things are different.

Edit: Nevermind! I have discovered the issue... If you have any Virtual HID elements for user interface in your control panel--->Devices you have to disable them.. Otherwise BF3 cannot use the controller.

Weird.. No other game that I know of has this issue.

Same server or different server? Low pings and small-ish player counters (larger player counts tend to cause the server itself to lag more)? Tried inverting who was in the heli and jet?

It's just semi-lazy programming. Most games simply enumerate the "first" input device that they can find instead of letting the user select one, so if you have multiple devices (or virtual devices), you may well get the wrong one. Some games will tend to get the 360 pad first because they use XInput which favors it. Others that use DirectInput or raw HID have no such preference.

Ideally the games should be enumerating all of the input devices and letting the user select one, but that requires more UI, etc. so they tend not to bother. Sad, but reality for many years.

Don't have any more info, I have tried doing it on the PC, but I am not good enough a pilot to do it. I'll keep trying.

Sure I'd be interested cause like I said I've been involved in many mid-air collisions and they always end badly for everyone involved ;)
