Assassin's Creed - New Interview

I cant wait for this game! Between this, Mass Effect, and Orange Box which I have been playing heavily for two weeks and still not yet beat Half Life 2 (let alone the episodes)..I will be immersed in gaming for months, months I tell you. It's awesome.

And round about if I ever finish those, I could buy COD4.

I'm also most encouraged most recent reports say most if not all the screen tearing is gone.

I'm still looking forward to AC...especially for the climbing. I loves my platforming. Framerate and tearing don't worry me too much...what worries me the most is this "twist".

I don't mind twists in games, in fact I like them....BUT so far they are using special effects which shove this twist in our face ALL the time, everytime we pass a character - during cutscenes with futuristic flashes. It means the twist is always in front of you - really taking you out of this beautiful world they have created. I really hope they have toned it down...all this Matrix malarky could destroy this game.

well then obviously the twist is something else.. lol

I don't think the twist is truly a "twist" in an M. Night Shyamalan kind of way... it's simply the framework around which the game's story is based. What they're calling the "worst kept secret in gaming", especially since the developers still won't talk about it.. hehe. Unless there's more to it than we've seen so far, which is possible. I guess we'll all find out in a couple of weeks.

I'm sure the twist mainly revolves around the game designers and artists not being stuck with the exact same graphical themese for the next 6 years of their careers. :p

Ironically, though, the game’s friendly controls are also its biggest shortcoming; killing your target normally instigates a chase sequence where you freerun across the rooftops and make fearsome leaps of faith to dodge your pursuers. But as there’s no jump button and your hero will perform most acrobatic moves automatically - Legend Of Zelda-style - the controls strip the game of the visceral thrill of making moves at precisely the right moment like you did in the developer’s earlier Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, making AC’s most exciting moments feel flat and as if they’re being played by someone else.

Thas is also exactly what I've been fearing from this game, from the moment I first saw how the controls worked. We'll have to wait and see whether this makes it more accessible, or just plain boring. A lot will depend on how important other skills in the game will be, like choosing the right strategy. It will be a real challenge though to make it exciting and challenging for players of different skills though, and for me I fear it will greatly reduce the sense of excitement and achievement in the way that Prince of Persia brought us. But I'm sure we'll get a demo, and then I'll know for sure. Maybe it's good enough in all those other areas (crowd strategy, target approach), and then I'll just get my climbing (and graphics?) kicks from Uncharted.

Oh man auto-jump is lame especially in this game. Although auto-jump won't ruin the game for me I'm still hyped for it.

Now that was unexpected... I don't mind not having a jump button for games like HS. But this sound like it could be as exciting as having Nariko do 6 button combos the minute she approached her enemies automatically...

I can only hope it will not be as bad as I'm imagining it...

I feel like this game is getting rushed out the door. And considering what a crowded marketplace this 07 holiday already is with AAA titles, It's a bad time to be a mediocre game.

Not saying that it is going to be mediocre. Just that if it is, this is the worst time to launch it. They might as well wait a few more months and bake it a little more.

I do. Not having a jump button in an action games like these is a crime against humanity! and automatically reduces review points of these games by 10-15p (1-100 scale) imo. This game just dropped from "very potential" to "well let's see, but I doubt it category."

Hmm... what have you heard ? I like the game concept and mechanics "on-paper" so far, especially the NPC AI part. The only thing I dislike is the hooded look.

It would be a disappointment if the final product is unpolished/buggy. Did the puppeteer control work as planned or did the devs compromise ?

In my book, having a jump button is better than without too... but if the combat is satisfying like Folklore and HS, then it is ok (because my attention will shift entirely to the fights). Besides, they usually have dodge/block and in some cases aerial/special moves during combat anyway.

However if AC's combat is relatively weak, then "no jumping" may dampen the experience further.

Despite some flaws, if the game is well put together, I will still buy it just because I like third person adventure.

Guys this game has a jump button, it's your legs (A or X), or your free hand, press either as you're running towards a wall and you'll vault over, or put one hand down and spring over.

The free run thing is when you want to just automatically lerap from object to object, very quickly, and in that case you simply hold down the A button and the character will automatically jump.

Now, anyone who's looked at the video's can't tell me this is a bad thing, seeing the guy leap from railing, to railing, onto a wall, onto the roof, off the roof, swing from a beam, to another beam, to another beam, leap off and land behind your prey...it's damn sweet.

Having to struggle with timing each jump, in an action game like this, would probably be beyond frustrating. You miss one jump, and your prey gets away, and then you either have to kill him the hard way(probably fight a ton of gaurds), or reload...with this implementation they make sure you feel like a master assassin and aren't worried about platforming, and can concentrate on strategy and technique in your assasinations.

Ok, that's how I remember it. That review article made it sound like the devs have tweaked/dumbed down the control scheme. Performing auto jump while holding down a "free-and-easy" button sounds good.

Ya, thats's not a real review as far as I'm concerned.

They have the release date wrong, and reviews are supposed to be emargoed currently. Also, it mentions absolutely nothing that couldn't have been gleaned from a demo build...

ACTUALLY...on second viewing, it's now been removed ;)

Assassin's Creed
Please note that the early review of Assassin's Creed that appeared here was published in error. The reveiw contained misleading information about the game's control system which should be disregarded. Please wait for the final, full review, which will be published online on November 16th.

I agree.

Well... if the game plan is still intact, then jumping is just another combination of limb controls.

Without demo, I hope the AC team does an "informercial" or "developer interviews" for the game, elaborating on the gameplay.
