As a console gamer, I tried a master race PC rig recently, and now I have a dirty eyesight. I want!!

Ever since I've had a job, I can afford a lot more games than the ones I have time to play...
In the PC, of course. If I had to pay 60€ for each game I play, i.e. console stuff, I'd have to be more cautious.

Far Cry 4 sets you back 30€ in kinguin/g2play, outside of a sales season. I don't understand how this makes such a big difference to someone who apparently spent >1200€ in a PC with a 144Hz monitor.

If we're going to discuss the 'PC Master Race' hegemony, then let's discuss how ceap the games can get in the long run, and how unneeded it is to resort to piracy..

Should of known better. You are just like a former addict who picked up the pipe and told yourself, "one hit is not going to hurt".

And whats up with the chair? Unless the guy is playing GTA 5 and barreling down Mount Chiliad for kicks, his chair shouldn't react like a bucking bronco.

Nevertheless, I too have been contemplating getting back into PC gaming. Luckily fully featured DX12 looked to be rather expensive for the time being so I am able to hold out since I need to build out a totally new desktop PC.
He is kind of new to PC gaming, and he had a few consoles before. Well, he is 36 y.o. and has two daughters with his partner, so he spends a lot of his time at home with his family and the PC certainly helps with that. You don't go out much and don't spend money on things you don't need.

I think the areas where the PC needs to improve is offline co-op for the most part.

Sorry, but the only thing I got out of your message is that your friend has enough money to buy loads of great PC components and is still such a large enough prick that he pirates Far Cry 4.

Which, of course, is completely common place among the PC Master Race. So when anybody complains about anything, yeah.. start there.
No he isn't, he is a good person.

He isn't rich, nor his partner, and he doesn't have a high income, and he told me "I feel sorry for the people who make these games but I prefer to pirate them because of expenses".

He spent some extra money to buy a good antivirus, he told me though.

just played BF4 multiplayer
OMG i has been spoiled with PC's and Destiny's stable frame rate...

flying on helicopter is annoying stutter.

but my friends on PS4 did not notice that problem...

lesson learned:
never play multiplatform game on PC AND Console.
Yes, the equipment isn't the same, and the good thing about consoles is the unified experience -save factors like the TV- where everyone is having the same framerate and see the same.

My friend's favourite game is BF4, and at 1080p plus 150+fps when I tried it on the Xbox One the experience wasn't that good when my memory was fresh. You get used to it anyways, but you can't help but recall some differences.

In addition to this, he has a mechanical keyboard and a mice with lots of dpi, plus a very low latency monitor, so you get the idea.

7.1 headphone + 144Hz LCD, that must be dumbfoundingly immersive.
In fact, I realized after the VR hype ended in the 90s that the silly helmets with stuff were not really needed, as I remembered Doom did the trick. First time I seen doom 1 shareware as a kid, that was on a kick ass PC : 486 DX 33 with VLB video card, adlib music and sound blaster effects. I was lost, knee deep in the dead.
I also have good memories from Doom and the long nights I didn't sleep that well because I was editing a map or trying a new exciting map or campaign.

The PC I used back in 1995 was even better than that -got it because of a car crash, when I didn't have a driving license and another person was driving-I was the youngest amongst the passengers, and the insurance gave me a compensation for the damage (I lost the spleen)-, it was a Pentium 100 with 32MB of RAM and an AWE32 soundcard with Win95.

It cost me 3000€ of the time -got it with part of the money from the compensation-, I asked my parents if I could buy a PC with part of the money and gave the rest to them.

I made some calculations and that PC, with the CPU, GPU (a sad Trident :( ), RAM, printer, soundcard, keyboard & mice, would cost 120.000€ nowadays. No kidding. 1MB of RAM cost 30€ back then...

Now multiply 30€ by 8000, when 8GB is the standard these days...

How about waiting for a Steam Sale.
He isn't into Steam nor GoG afaik. He does have an Origin account because of BF4. I even showed him my GoG account so he could use some of my games but I don't think he downloaded any of my 100 games at GoG.

Ever since I've had a job, I can afford a lot more games than the ones I have time to play...

Even console games aren't that expensive nowadays, because there are constant sales, deals and discounts every week if you are patient enough to wait past launch date.

What's the price?

PS4 has been out 16 months. 16 months after PS3, dual 8800 GTs were available. The price to surpass the consoles is lower than before because the consoles aren't top-end HW, but this isn't anything new. It comes down to pricing and software and experience. The best visuals have remained with PC since cross-platform because commonplace.
Dunno about his PC, but if you want to make a custom PC he recommended me to start with an Intel 1150 socket, which are apparently the best these days.

I made an estimate and without a PC monitor, a PC I could fancy could well be 2800€ in price, assembled by the store's staff -you save 48€ if you assemble it yourself-. But I thing I could do with a 600€ PC a year after Vulkan, DirectX 12, etc are released.

Expensive configuration:

Intel Socket 1150 processor - 107.1€ (minimal components installed, which means a motherboard, CPU and the least amount of RAM assemblers let you choose from, 2GB)

On another note, I will follow @AlNets suggestion and tell my friend about Steam and GoG deals and stuff.

Here's some tips...

Unless you plan on overclocking, go for the cheapest motherboard you can get with good reviews. In other words somewhere in the 60-100 USD range. It will give you the exact same performance and stability as motherboards costing 250-400 USD. And even if you do overclock, you can usually get the same overclocked performance in a 100-150 USD MB as you do in a 300+ USD MB.

Top notch computer cases don't have to cost an arm and a leg. You can get very high quality cases for around 100-150 USD. You can get good cases for under 100 USD (they just tend to make assembling the system a bit more of a pain in the butt).

Just that would save you 1000 USD/Euros off your build.

Also, don't get a sound card right away. The vast majority of people can't tell the difference between onboard audio and a sound card. And for those that can? They can't tell the difference in games, only in music...with extremely high quality speakers or headphones. Save the money and don't bother with a sound card.

Another tip, you don't need a NAS HDD for a desktop system, unless you REALLY think your computer is going to be on 24/7 with the potential for the HDD to be constantly accessed for most of the day. Save money and get a standard HDD. Or SSD (but wait on the SSD, prices are rumored to be dropping by up to 50% in the next 6 months). Really good quality 120 GB SSDs can already be gotten for around 50-60 USD on sale

A CPU at 2/3 the cost of the one you chose will likely give you at worst 95% of the gaming performance. But will usually give you almost the exact same gaming performance.

Er, a Karaoke speaker?

Watercooler is a bit excessive, again unless you plan on doing some relatively extreme (not liquid nitrogren extreme :p ) overclocking. And even then it usually only gives on average another 100 or so mhz more than a really good air cooler. Unless you live in a place that is very hot and you don't have air conditioning.

A high performance PC doesn't have to be extremely expensive.

Regards,
SB

Here's some more hints about audio setup. Don't bother with anything for audio other than using the HDMI Audio that's built into the video cards anyways. Save the money on the audio card and get yourself a proper AV Receiver and 5.1 / 7.1 speaker system.

holy.... if he dont have that much income... i wonder how long he save money for that 4089.95 €

it already took me years of saving to buy PS4 lol. then there's phone expense smething like every 2 years, and PC every 5 years or something.

EDIT:
ah! thats where's my fault is. I should stop upgrading all of them and focusing only for PS4 or PC :D

@Cyan
you and him can "game share" PS4 games and practically got instant 50% discount for all games :p

too bad i have nobody to share games in my place :(

My tips for the above list:

- Spend less on mobo, it can still be a Z97, but the top end isn't necessary unless you want to enter overclocking comps or definitely will make use of ALL the features etc.

- 16GB of 1600/1866MHz RAM is all you need for a current 1150 system, for now and until the next console generation.

- Spend less on the heatsink, you might not even need to overclock for current games and future titles using new API's will be even less CPU bound in theory.

- Spend more on a larger, more modern SSD. Go for 500GB IMO and aim to store your currently played games on it.

- Spend less on the HDD, A WD green or the like will be fine, 3TB will be fine unless you want to hoard a hell of a lot of media. Use this drive for backing up games you currently aren't playing but do not want to re-download.

- As shifty said, a good case should be $150-250 at most. Try not to get too carried away with unique aesthetics and settle for something well built and understated looking. If you like the over the top look, fine, that can be had too for a much lower cost depending on tastes.

- You can spend less on the PSU unless you want multiple super high end heavily overclocked GPU's (dumb idea). Even that 295x2 would do fine on a platinum/gold 850w. For any single chip video card 650-700w plat/gold is more than enough.

- I'd recommend against dual GPU for anyone who doesn't love tinkering with PC's. Hell, I'd recommend against it for anyone full stop to be honest. If you want to blow money to have the best, buy a Titan X, if you want value for money and don't core about heat and power too much, 290x. If you do care about those things, 970 or 980.

- Buy a DAC that uses spdif/optical, USB or just use HDMI rather than buy a soundcard.

- Peripherals are a very personal thing but consider not buying the best of the best just because. On the note of peripherals being personal but very important, this applies to a monitor more than anything, so a build like that that implies using some old crappy monitor.... don't. You don't build a machine with such a video card to game at 1080p or less.

- If you must use Wi-FI buy a proper adaptor with an aerial. You can get cheap ones that plug in via Ethernet and look like a router. They work well from my limited experience. USB dongles, not so much. But then again my experience with them is from 5 years ago. I hate wireless for serious use.

A sound card is good if you use the analog sound, though to go expensive isn't much needed at all. Difference can't be heard between an output with 110dB signal/noise ratio and one with 120dB signal/noise : both are a perfect signal with one a little bit more perfect than the other.
Xonar STX is mildly interesting though as a DAC / stereo heaphone amplifier combo.

IMO a sound card is better than a USB dongle or a little box, just because it is contained in the PC rather than hanging out of it. But it doesn't really matter, you gotta have a DAC and you use it where it's more convenient to you. A receiver/5.1 or 7.1 amp has good enough DACs inside (but, shouldn't it have a displayport input? a hdmi 2.0 input? or can you use the vid card's or even moterboard's hdmi output for sound while you use displayport or dual link dvi for video output)

but HDMI to receiver then to display... doesnt it add lag?

playing on PC that expensive seems best if all is directly connected.

http://versus.com/en/nvidia-geforce-gtx-970-vs-gainward-gaeforce-gtx-550-ti-gs <- this actually looks like a sizable performance upgrade I could do with not that big an increase in power consumption (116->148w). Edit: peak is 300w, but looked at the 550ti's peak and that's already 250w as well ...

And only as expensive as a second PS4, which seems ... ok, will give me enough power for the rest of the generation I'm guessing.

Edit: also comes with a copy of the Witcher III (voucher). Hmmm.

Everything adds lag, the question is whether you notice it. The answer should be no. I never noticed my receiver adding lag.

@Cyan Btw I find it rather lame this guy spends so much money on his pc but doesn't buy games. If you are willing time wait for sales you can easily get 5 ~ 10 good games per year for 100 euros or less.

It might. However, the receiver should have hdmi pass through that should be lag-less. To be really sure you actually have to test (my receiver's scaler is faster than my tv's).

At the start of last gen, PC graphics cards were about 100W. Whereas at the start of this gen, they're about 3x that. So of course PC is comparatively far ahead this time around.

The difference isn't quite that great. That fastest AMD GPU available around the launch of the last gen consoles was the X1900XTX at 135w. At the launch of this gen it was the 7970 at 250w so a <2x increase and an arguably greater performance advantage than the X1900XTX held.. In Nvidia terms the fastest GPU - the 7800GTX 512 had a TDP of 108w compared with 195w of the 680 GTX at the launch of this gen, a much less than 2x increase but with a far greater performance advantage compared to that held by the 7800GTX.

And CPU's are actually drawing less energy now than they did at the PS360 launch.

Why is it always PC Master Race and Console Plebs? How about PC Plebs? PC Middle Class? Where is the cut for Master Race? When talking about PC vs Console, Master Race always the one pitted against Console, but I don't think I'm in that race since my PC is weaker than PS4/X1.
