I've known for a while, and even mentioned on Ars, that Intel has a team that's actively courting the Sony PlayStation 4 contract, and Intel VP Pat Gelsinger affirmed to me in an interview that the company would love to be in a next-generation console.

...

I myself have actually had informal, off-the-record conversations that indicate to me that there may not be a lot of love for Intel on the technical front inside of Sony...

Validity of tese rumors aside, if they were true, does this mean Intel struck out with MS?

Huh, I'm struggling to get my head round this.

But also see here: http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=52155 (where there are other Intel/Sony links and commentary from our erstwhile colleagues*).

Haven't heard any rumours about Intel/MS (although, again, possibly see thread above).

*Haven't looked too closely at the other thread but there is an Inquirer link in there... :|

EDIT: Duh for rushing to post. There is mention of the Inquirer story in the Ars link...

EDIT 2: If true, I'm wondering what the real immediate benefit is to Intel. And damn mention of Nehalem. One of my key hopes was that with a derivative of Cell in PS4 the shift for devs - surely a win for consumers? - would be easier whilst making BC (for those that care) easier too. Heck, if there was a pared down version in the PSP2 the benefits are clear to see. I should dig up news on Sony's deal with Nvidia from a few years back...

Caveat: I know nothing about this market area at all. I'd recommend heading to the other thread too for some more reasoned thoughts. :(

EDIT 3: Thread rendered redundant by Josh's Next Gen thread IMO - http://forum.beyond3d.com/showthread.php?t=31379 I'm outta here!
