Anyone tried any 30" monitor?

I personally wouldn't recommend the Dell 3007 though. I find mine buzzes (which drives me up the wall). I get weird flashes once in a while which could be either the monitor or graphics card. I don't like the way it relies so heavily on the USB connection to the PC for various controls and other functions - I've had it get into a state in which the power button wouldn't work and I had to reboot the PC to regain control of the monitor. All in all very poor for a £1000 monitor.

Don't get me wrong, I'm sold on the 30" business, just not the Dell 3007.

I have 20" dell and I have a problem with the power as well, though it may be different.

Mine basically gets into a standby mode and won't wake up sometimes. I have to turn off power to PC and then turn it back on to make it wake up.

It is incredibly annoying, but it is my motherboards fault as far as I can tell. I worked fine before I got the new motherboard, and then did it with 3 different graphics cards consistently. I emailed Asus tech support about it and they did not even bother to respond...

One thing to note for serious gamers is that the 3008 apparently has around 50 ms input lag. It's not as bad as the 2408, but it's not negligible either IMO.

I know what you mean waiting Humus.
My Dell 3008 is showing a 9/2/08 delivery date.
I ordered a Spyder 3 Elite which I should get tomorrow.
I'll test it on my 2407.

Just my take on this is that different models may make different kinds of noise. I own an HP LP3065 which "ticks" with a 4-second interval while in energy-save/standby mode.
Apparently this is a common problem on the LP3065 and HP will not fix it for you (they say it's built into the design of the screen).
So if you want a silent system using standby mode you may be dissatisfied with this screen.

While looking at user reviews myself I've seen reports about hissing/buzzing noises (during "on" mode) from the Dell, Samsung and Daewoo 30" models. Don't know about the LG.

I have two 3007, one is HC. Both are utterly outstanding, and pale everything else by comparison. I've had the HC for 9 months, and the standard one for nearly two years, never had any of the problems that nutball spoke about.

slight edit: I did get a very very flash (on-off) with my 8800GTX while on standard desktop, never in games. This hasnt happened so far with my 4870.

Yeah I'm 80% convinced that this is (was) a graphics card issue rather than a monitor issue. I haven't seen it since I moved from XP to Vista but that could just be coincidence.

From what I've read this supposed ticking of the HP only happens in stand-by mode and can only be heard if you have a totally silent system and/or put your ear against the back of the screen. Doesn't sound like much of an issue to me.

Yay! My new HP LP3065 arrived yesterday. :)
So far I'm loving it. Although it takes some getting used to with all this extra space. Gaming at 2560x1600 rocks though. :D

I pulled the trigger on a Dell 3008, arrives on Monday. Worst thing about the 3007 is comprehensively rectified (input options) and I can't wait to see how it compares.

Humus, your setup looks sweeeet :D

Yes. I think the Gateway 30 inch might be worth taking a look at considering the number of inputs it has and its scaling chip being builtin

Aye, I've got the Gateway 30" and it blows away anything I've seen from Dell, Samsung, or HP for what I use it for. Which is gaming, desktop work, and the occasional video.

For professional image editing however, I wouldn't recommend it.

The scaling chip in it is absolutely superb compared to what's used in competing solutions. Unfortunately, you also pay for it with a higher permium on the monitor.

If you don't need the excellent scaling then go with a cheaper model from Dell, Samsung or HP. Although I find that now that Games for Windows branded games so far have all had the option to run in a Window, I've been using that more often than running it non-widescreen or at a lower resolution. But when I do have a run a lower resolution, it's almost impossible to tell I'm not running at native res.

Why does it blow the other models away? There can't be much in it, so it'd be interesting to know what makes the Gateway so special other than the scaler (or is that it?).

Out of interest, and if you don't mind saying (and others in the thread), what did you pay?

I paid less than $1750 for the 3008 with 3yr Premium Panel warranty (swap out on any count of stuck or otherwise dead pixels, standard warranty is > 5px).

I have the 3008 sitting next to my 2407. I love it so far.
Makes my 24 look smaller than it is.
Builtin scaler looks to be doing a great job.

I forget the exact price I paid. But it was I believe 1699 before S&H. S&H was a ton due to the size and weight (it ships with a speaker bar). It was on sale, I got it shortly after release.

And yeah, pretty much the scaler made this a must have for me. I had previously thought my old Dell 2405 had a decent scaler, but it's just in a different league. Scaling quality is similar to the better quality LCD TV's you'll find.

For example the original Xbox looks better on the Gateway 30" than it ever did on the Dell 2405. Playing at standard definition NTSC resolution. Likewise when I tried the crysis demo on my old HD 2900 XT and had to run it at extremely low resolution. I think I ran it at 1400x900? Can't remember now.

However, color fidelity is definitely not as good as monitors using premium panels with better color range. Then again that doesn't matter much to me all things said. White is white. Black is pretty black (for an LCD). And colors are good enough for my slightly red-green color blind eyes. :)
