Anandtech: 3DMark worst benchmark ever seen

I must say that i don't really get it either. 3D Mark 2003 might have been a troublesome child (largely because of a certain IHV) but i still value the information we got from it.

And it seems that the IHV in question likes to use it also, now that is :)

hm... all I use 3dmark for is to tell me if my own system is performing on par or otherwise with other people's systems. I don't really care if it's uber fast. *shrug*

They should say why it's not good specifically... bad form as it is.

With respect to the ultra extreme, does nvidia manufacture the chips for all 3rd party cards :?: If not, it could just be the 3rd party guys have enough yields to justify an ultra extreme (supreme supafied mega ultimate platinum  ) edition...

Well, OK if you're that interested. Didn't really think it needed that much explaining. 3DMark in all its incarnations is a perfectly acceptable benchmark if its results are taken in context. I don't really see what it's done to deserve such throwaway remarks.

Who's going to take bets that if the next 3DMark shows nVidia in a noticably favorable light...Anand (and many others) who currently routinely trash 3DMark will find it "worthy of their time" again.

The scary thing is that I suspect the same thing will occur.

+1

In truth Anand has never liked 3DMark very much - before or after '03. I doubt that will change and I doubt Anand would want Derek to be using it.

I think you are misunderstanding John Reynolds. He posted a link to an article which goes on to suggest that 3dmark03 is a horrible benchmark. I don't believe John actually feels that way, although perhaps he does. ;)

No, I don't. I think 3DMark03 has pretty much vindicated itself over time as a useful synthetic. And I have no idea what ED is asking in terms of a response from me.

Mebbe he's looking for the why of your post, which I put down to this comment of Anand's:

That joke of a 'review' said:
So, why are we at all OK with using FarCry's built-in demo mode? Because much of FarCry game play has to do with sneaking around, walking through the levels, and taking in the scenery. No, it's not the all-encompassing perfect benchmark, but it isn't the worst thing that we've seen either (*cough* - 3dmark - *cough*).
EDITED BITS: Formatting.

Well if the info is correct and he benchmarked the 6800s with no aa and labeled them with 4x aa then he really needs to go and take a new class on benchmarking

Do they have classes on benchmarking? :|
