Don't go with that. AFAIK EA sports have already tried to push realism. FIFA will tend towards photorealistic as much as they can make it. They won't make any art-direction decisions to move away from that, as that's not what any gamer wants. We want to look at Rooney/Henry/Ronaldino etc as though we're watching the TV, and then move them around as though we're really controlling a football match with God-like powers to make people do what we want them to!
Are FIFA games actually good these days? They went downhill big time years ago, especially compared to PES, then i think they made a good one (2004? or 2005? cant remember)... So what are they like these days?
2006 is supposedly pretty good in FIFA terms. They're trying to copy PES even more than the last versions though, this time even the controls are completely identical. Some say its the best FIFA in years, not that that means anything. I haven't played it yet, just read the reviews, pretty much all of which make it clear that gameplay still pales in comparison to PES. Both have become harder and lean more towards simulation now, no more pure arcade action in either camp.
I've watched some gameplay videos of the current FIFA and the X360 one, neither really seems to get that flowing football feeling over while watching. It very much looks like a game, the passing, dribbling and movement is just artificial. I am tecnically impressed by FIFA on X360, but some things do look pretty weird (skin, faces, stiff shorts and sleeves). If you're getting to that kind of detail level, those problems are way more annoying that in current-gen games. The gras is nice though, as appears to be the lighting. I'm keeping fingers crossed Konami will technically play in the same ballpark this time, while continuing its IMO better history in animation and realism. I wanna play a true next-gen PES next year around this time!
We;ve played PES and FIFA in mixes. The latest FIFA we played (2004 I think) was very playable. The latest PES shows the difference in control and how the players interact realisitically with the ball. If you look at the Fifa movie it shows the ball just sticks to the player's feet, unlikely PES where the player move the ball with their feet. But PES is annoying in that the ball keeps bouncing off players. They've got sod-all ball control skills.
Are they going to be able to use the next-gen Renderware which EA demoed with Fight Night at the PS3 press conference at E3?
Tony Hawk was another Renderware game too.
As a casual soccer fan, PES would be more interesting if it got at least the major club/league/player licenses.
I'm sure EA will have some WC edition too next spring or summer. Some people thought FIFA Road to the World Cup 98 was one of the better soccer games of all time.
