Alien Isolation

Playing through this now on the XB1. Scariest bloody game I've played in quite some time.
Yeah I've been working my way through it and although far from perfect, it's a pretty great experience. Only just met the alien a second time and it's really not easy to get past him!

The only scariest game I can think of is P.T.

But scope of Alien Isolation production is far larger. They created entire world with incredible detail.

I've played both Amnesia games, Dead Space 1 and 2, Outlast, Evil Within, Resident Evil 4 and Alien Isolation this year. I'm pretty desensitized to horror entertainment in general and to be frank this felt mostly like a twist on stealth games. ;)

I think the androids were more disturbing than the alien. The uncanny valley thing.

But I dont think Alien Isolation's achievement was related to horrific and disturbing imagery. I think its achievement was related to its tension and sense of survival.

That's true. It's psychological horror. Fear of what will happen if you don't be sneaky. Combat is difficult / impossible so there's little feeling of control over the situation.

I think it has similarities to a lot of games. It's reminiscent of Amnesia but it doesn't have the same level of psychological manipulation. It has shooting, unlike Amnesia or Outlast, but it's not an action frenzy (it's more like a stealth FPS). The character interaction is superficial and similar to Dead Space.

System Shock 2 might pop to mind too for this sort of sci-fi space ship/station psychological horror.

The game was awesome. I would have loved to have other melee weapons though -- like a combat knife that I could slash the Androids/Humans with.. :)

The Alien was quite disturbing at the time of the first movie, but it has become a pop culture icon by now. We're completely de-sensitivized to it's look, maybe even kids are not scared at its sight anymore... Although it could still have some subconscious effect but it'd take some serious academic research to find out...

It's funny you mention SS2, as I believe it was a lot more effective especially gameplay wise.

The Alien in the game does not feel to me as a more advanced intelligence compared to the hybrids and other creatures in SS2. I think it's because it's much harder to fool, as it always seems to converge on the player's position, as if its perception isn't bound by the limits of any other being.

"The effects of subliminal exposure to a phalus in unexpected and unusual anatomical areas of monstrous creations"
That would win an Ig Nobel Prize for sure

The obvious response would be that some would prefer to be chased by a big vagina, but then you start thinking about it... ;)

On a somewhat related note, we're having some really crazy meetings about an issue at work nowadays, and of course it allowed for some super silly jokes too, hopefully I'll be able to elaborate in a few months :)

Sorry but who wouldn't love be chased by a big penis while bored stiff on a spaceship in the middle of nowhere??

You guys are fucking killing me! I ll have six packs ready for next summer

edit:
Well I have a WIP that may satisfy both worlds. An alien suggestive of both penis and a vagina?
You ve got the alien newborn as it was meant to be (in the Alien Ressurection movie its genitals were removed at the post process)
I even made a tiny clit for anatomical correctness:D

I think the original Newborn was even more creepy, but I'm too scared to look up actual images ;)
