3DFX is back???

The original trademarks seems to have all lapsed (not that I did a thorough search, though) so pretty much anyone could be using the 3dfx brand without issue.

There are a couple of active registrations for the word mark (none seem related to Nvidia/3dfx of old), while something eerily similar to the old 3dfx logo is trademarked from China. The latter probably isn't legal though, as Nvidia likely holds the copyright to the logo and related materials, even if they have lost the trademarks through disuse.

Man, hearing about this got me plummeting down the rabbit hole.

Knowing how long enthusiasts kept trying to get the engineering sample Rampage boards to work, as well as tinkering with Voodoo5 drivers to keep it working for newer games for as long as possible - it would NOT surprise me if this is a real attempt by some ex-3dfx engineers to revive the brand.

How funny would it be if it returns as an AMD-exclusive AIB vendor akin to PowerColor and Sapphire...

What do you mean "tried"?
I call this a success

Not sure if this is though

It's sortof successful. A lot of features don't work properly on the card, and the memory controller in the Rampage chips is highly unstable. It only runs for a few minutes before crashing.

So 3DFx Copyrights are at nvidia. So maybe a special nvidia gpu editon?

The copyright and trademarks lapsed in 2016. nVidia didn't use it, so they lose it.

Perhaps by the time we get around to an "omega" variant of covid we should be ready for the end-times and witness resurrections of 3dfx and bitboys oy.
