[360, PS3] Dead Space 2 demo

I still don't get why people bitch about Resident Evil abandoning its slower paced horror roots and then get all excited about the in-your-face-b-movie-gorefest that is Dead Space, with all its cheap jump scare tactics and crass visuals that leave absolutely nothing to the imagination. Nothing about that series is even remotely scary.

I liked the first game up to a certain point, but it ran out of steam just after the halfway point when it was merely content with throwing waves upon waves of the same non-descript enemies at me.

Except the sound which was creepy, not as much as Condemned: Criminal Origins....but still (people should play Penumbra or Amnesia if they want to experience a really high level of scare mixed with tension).

Anyways I liked Resident Evil 5 a lot more than Dead Space, I don't get why people complain about lack of movement while aiming when that's pretty much the general thumb rule with every console TPS. You'll rarely see a Dead Space 2 gameplay where the player is moving while shooting.

What they should complain about instead is the slow walking speed (which doesn't affects me much cause I am used to doing 180 degree turns)

Same here. At least RE5 was varied. It wasn't exactly a great horror game, but at least it was a slick action game.
I'm playing Amnesia The Dark Descent on my PC at the moment. Now that's how you do horror (which I'm pretty sure is a word derived from horrifying, not horrible). Demon's Souls immediately springs to mind as well.

Well I remember RE5 feeling a lot more tankish then Dead Space, to the point where the controls were really the main challenge of RE4 & 5. The aesthetics might not be your thing but I think Dead Space is a much better tuned horror experience than the past couple Resident Evil games, especially since those games haven't really even been trying to be scary any more. Even on normal I was fumbling to find the right ammo and to keep track of the baddies in the demo and the sound plus light effects really get the heart beating.

Resident Evil hasn't really been trying, I agree, but Dead Space tries way too hard and fails miserably in my opinion. If it was a movie it would have been directed by Paul W. S. "I hate dialog" Anderson. At least RE4 had some seriously nerve-wrecking moments, like when you first encounter the blind dude with Wolverine Claws in the cellar, or Zalazar's insectoid henchmen.

The problem with RE since 3 and afterwards is that the main characters were getting more and more weapons, ammo and melee abilities, to such an extend that its like controlling the bastard child of Superman and Rambo. And thats an understatement. You are actually controlling Chuck Norris in disguise which is even worse.

The soundtrack is also not as atmospheric as it used to. The game no longer gives you the chance to get scared.

Its as scary as Devil May Cry1=Zero scare
In Dead Space the atmosphere is much better, it makes you wonder when something is going to jump right in your face (something that was there in Resi1), and Isaac isnt overpowered relative to the monsters

RE 4 was amazing. RE5 isn't a horror game at all, its a shooter. it cannot be discussed as a horror game.

A true console horror game this gen has been SIREN. Yes, there's a fine line between creating tension and fear, but SIREN does a good job a that. I haven't played DS much, so i won't comment. RE5 was not a horror game in any way.

What we see here in this walkthrough is just a set piece set to make you thrilled.
Horror is when you are afraid to turn a corner in a game. Good horror game is when you know the world is wierd and scary, it gives you the creeps but you still want to know what happens next and play it again and again. SIREN has that ! (but from Ch 5 onwards, before that its pretty boring too.)

This seems a logical place to ask...

I want DS2 for the PS3 and owning the Move I'd like the extra 'Extraction' - sites don't seem overly clear...it looks like you can only get the version that includes Extraction by pre-ordering, does that seem right? I'd like to get the game but have so many to play I was thinking of getting it in a couple of months after a bit of a price drop, but I don't want to miss Extraction!?

Atmosphere I agree on (until you get tired of the same old metal corridors at least), but Dead Space never made me wonder about anything. The game is predictable as hell. Whenever you pick up something of importantance, enter a particulary creepy environment or solve a little puzzle, you can bet your ass that the next enemy attack will be imminent. It's the same crap Doom 3 pulled a couple of years ago. I think effective horror needs restraint and time to build. A constant sensual assault on the other hand just gets annoying after a while.

Totally agree on Siren by the way. That game is just creepy as hell.

Didn't they proudly announce that every DS2 on the PS3 would come with Extraction back at E3?

Yes, but now they say that there'll be a demo with every DS2 on ps3 and you need the collector's edition I guess for the full game.

Basically, they decided they can ask for more money for that game , then why not ? Maybe they'll release it as a PSN game later too.
