Hi all,

So I got a new camera (WX10) as the old one broke, and I'm very happy with it. It is positively tiny, but takes excellent 'auto' shots, and for a regular camera, amazing 1920x1080i 50fps video. What I'm noticing however is that when I'm playing those back on my PC or PS3 they look absolutely stunning, but on youtube the de-interlacing is crap. So I'm wondering what a good tool is to de-interlace them to 25fps 1080p before uploading ... anyone any experience?

Here's a link to my first test (not great conditions, but still good, and more importantly, you can see where youtube fails):

And here's a really short one that I'll use to test different types to compare from now on as soon as I get some tips in. ;)

for auto deinterlace try google -> MediaCoder
then encode to MP4 video and AAC audio

alternatively can also use Xvid4psp 5

Thanks! And to be sure, the camera encodes to 24mbit AVCHD

Speaking of encoding... What's the best software to use for ripping and transcoding DVDs for watching on an iPhone4?

Help much appreciated. :)

I use imToo. Don't know if it is the best, but I've been a paying customer there for a while now ... use it primarily for encoding to PSP, but same dif, their iOS device support is as expansive as any other.

It costs money? I was hoping for something free... :p

Anyway, thanks for the tip, I'll go have a look. It would be nice to have my favorite movies on my iPhone, not that I'd watch them all the time of course... Just for a rainy day or something!

Some of their stuff may be free. I just have the full package, including GPGPU support and such.

Ok so I've tried all suggestions so far on this page, and none of them work. So my search continues. Files are .mts, suitable for BluRay burning. Like I said, 24Mbit AVCHD stuff.

how about Avivo
or badaboom or whatever its called

I did find that imToo also has an application for this, HD Video Converter 6. It looks like it can do the job, though the trial is limited in time and doesn't allow me to properly test it which is annoying, as the result is always 8.6mb from a 24mb file no matter my settings. This also uses the ATI GPU enhancements (which is formerly avivo I think) and all my cores, so on paper it is good, but it's still $40. I'd have to know in advance that I'd be using it a lot, and I'm not sure just yet. Would be nice if youtube deinterlaced themselves. :p

That's with the default "fast" deinterlace? You could try the "slower" deinterlace filter or the decomb (frame adaptive deinterlacing) filter for optimum quality at the cost of encoding speed.

No, I took slowest. It's chugging away at a much longer outdoors video next, which should show off quality much nicer (though mind you, I'm still fairly new at this filming thing and this is the first time I even use something that can zoom while filming, so expect a lot of shakey cam ;) )

Try a quick one with the decomb filter too. It should better preserve detail for still (or still-ish) shots, but it can cause a slight "pop" (say, if you do a "pan->pause->pan") that some may find distracting.

Yeah, decomb seems nice, slightly better than de-interlace perhaps even. Anyway, here's the outdoor longer movie, ready and 1080p, with de-interlace (slowest) like the other one. Sorry for the shakey cam, but otherwise I'm very happy with the quality even on youtube (but local it's still quite a lot sharper though). Great quality for such a tiny little camera.
