I think that's their key strategy with this area. A choice between high markup Memory cards, or low markup, wide appeal MemSticks. If you own a MemStick for your PS3, when you want a handheld you think DS or PSP, see you can swap music+films between the Sony hardwares, and that has 'product synergy' the alternative handheld doesn't provide. Then you want a new camera, looking around, and see amongst lots of different makes a Sony camera with MemStick. Great, you'll be able to use the 1Gig stick you bought for PSP/PS3 and show images around. Now, what digital video camera?...xbdestroya said:I just think it would tie in well and make one more likely to buy a memory-stick enabled cell phone, digital camera, or other device if they already have some memory sticks to go along with their PS3 and/or PSP, and this must be something that on some level Sony is hoping for.
I don't think they've thought it through too well in the whole Sony group. I don't think they've planned ahead for directory structures and file types. Given the directory structure of PSP, will slapping the same stick into a camera produce photo's instantly viewable on PSP? Certainly their MPEG encoding software for PSP sounds the pits, and at 20 bucks a whack where the rivals are freeware! But I get the impression the new head of Sony (who's name eludes me. Stringer?) is wanting to pool together the different sectors and work towards a cohesive whole, encouraging a Sony household by adding incentives to buy into an entire product range, instead of the usual household mishmash of different manufacturers for different appliances.
