Avowed [XBSX|S, PC, XGP]

Not every souls game needs to be Elden Ring to be good, same is true for Avowed. I am enjoing this game and so far it has been very pleasent suprise.

edit:

I fully agree here with Jeff Grubb, i think Avowed will be this game that in future poeple will look back and realise how underrated it was when it came out. Some of the reviews are suprising to me as well, i feel it deserve a bit more creds than it does. I am not suprise becouse as i said before hate farming gives a lot more clicks.

I finished my second playthrough, all quests completed, all weapons and armour found etc. It's a fun game, a weird cross between Greedfall and the Last of Us, but mostly Greedfall. But take away the shiny gloss of the graphics and the basic stab at some physics related interactions (freezing or electrifying water etc) and it just feels really dated. Like if they re-skinned The Outer Worlds but took away some of the depth and complexity of story telling, and reduced the world to the bare minimum needed to convey the protagonist from one plot line to another.

Like I said though, it's not bad it's adequate for a time filler and probably worth it as a GP game. It's just that it's all been done before, and better in many ways, by other games. Even Obsidians previous outings are more complete somehow.

I respect your review, but just think that it does everything well enough that I like it quite a bit more than some.

I like that it's stripped down to story, exploration and combat and doesn't try to overwhelm you with nonsense.

For me, I'm glad that if I see some coins I can grab them without worrying about going to jail or getting ganked by guards. It's a feature not a bug. I get that for some people it breaks their immersion too much.

It's an adventure game first and an RPG second is probably the thing that puts some people off, I think. Obsidian games and Elder Scrolls type games are usually the other way around.

It's almost Zelda-like, in some respects, with environmental puzzles etc...

I tried that. It doesn't work for all cloth awnings though, which is another thing that I noticed. There is a clear lack of consistancy in how features have been implemented. Almost as though someone was trying something out but then that wasn't propagated throughout the game.

And why go to that trouble if you are then going to leave NPCs in a state where they are just statues that either never move or just repeat the same very limited action over and over again?

I find that the NPCs move around a lot more than people made out in reviews, but I'll weigh in on that and cloth physics as I get further into the game.

Sometimes it's interesting to me to see my brother engage with gaming. He generally only has GamePass Ultimate, but occasionally buys other games like Baldur's Gate 3. About once a year he buys a game that isn't on GP.

He's completely captivated by Avowed. The last time I saw him get this into a game is Dishonored and Witcher 3, both of which he completed multiple times. He thought Skyrim was just "ok". He didn't finish BG3 because it got too hard.

I'd still consider him a desired customer for MS. During the generation he'll likely pay $1200 for GP and buy about 6 or 7 games.

I don't know why I posted this in the Avowed thread, but I got to thinking how in a lot of ways the game is in a bit of a sweet spot for some people and a great GP game. The AA budget means that Obsidian has already put out 3 games this generation with a fourth on the way this fall. Average review scores of 80. 6 million people tried it. MS has to be pretty pleased with this one, I think.

It honestly appeals a lot to me, I haven't gotten to purchasing it yet because I already have a number of games to finish (or play more of) on my list, but it has a little something or combination thereof that makes me want to play it.
(After reading a few reviews and watching a couple first episodes of let's play. [Same starting sequence from different people to see how differently it can be.])

Immersive fabric physics that only sometimes break are only sometimes immersion breaking.

lots of games have the "bug" where if you move the camera away from a character with cloth physics on their clothes and then quickly back again the clothes flap up and then "physics down" again

I played a little more last night and was delighted to come across a really cool Temple that was fun to explore with traps and underwater caverns etc... The devs really went to town with some of the set pieces in this game. There's quite a bit of cool lore as well if you feel like reading it or talking to NPCs to get it. Because it's a AA budget game you don't get these fantastic video sequences you might otherwise get, but the story/lore is there if you're willing to read it. :)

All the kudos to the developers at Obsidian! Another grand update has arrived for the game:

My brother finished it last night and was sad that it ended. He said "I just feel empty inside now". LOL

He really loved it. I told him it was likely there would be DLC at some point. And also to go play Sea of Stars.

I found a flaming sword and beautiful shield that look so cool that I regret not making a fighter build. LOL

This is not really a 40 hour game if you want to explore it in detail. More like 60-80 hours I think.

I'm still an 8.5 with this one, but the lack of dynamism in certain areas does hold it back.

To be fair there are a lot of special weapons you can find, wands, swords, bows. spears. I think I managed to collect them all. In the end I used Whisper of Exiles (wand), Aurochs-Skin Grimoire, Storm Sworn (bow), and Heavenstrike (musket) all maxed out. And Spiritmender (armour) tansmogged to look like Necropants - 'cos who doesn't like a boob tube and leggings :D

I also think I managed to get all the armour sets , amulets, and rings. And the star metal , don't forget the star metal!

I think they're all there in the images, plus avowed side by side with shadows which I am greatly enjoying right now!
