Nvidia GeForce RTX 50-series Blackwell reviews

So it does bring up an interesting issue of how much communication and to whom is the correct obligation here.

Nvidia is 100% responsible for communicating the PhysX impact as that’s their baby and they sold it directly to customers. For the 3rd party OpenCL stuff yeah they never cared about that even when OpenCL had a fighting chance so nobody should be surprised.

Yeah, the deprecation notice was published well in advance.
People just didn't realize that it meant that all gaming related stuff which is using 32 bit CUDA would stop working too.

At this point, I think the biggest responsibility lies with the developers. A big problem in the gaming industry is that they leave games stuck on old versions of software that are gradually losing support. CUDA is a recent example, but how many different audio drivers have stopped working on modern systems? Even DRMs, like the blessed SecuROM.

That's why I admire GOG, which restores compatibility to old games by updating libraries, as they recently did with Dino Crisis.

How could GOG fix this? I thought they'd need the game source to fix it.

For all the talk about how "boring, disappointing and pointless" the card is even Steve couldn't make this chart look worse than it does:

Ha, the DF conclusion was similar. The 5070 sucks!!! Also, we must begrudgingly admit the 5070 is the best value card on the market until tomorrow. This must be a really frustrating time for reviewers.

My napkin math turned out to be pretty accurate. From DF and TPU numbers it's about 25% slower than the 5070 Ti so the 9070 should land around 10% faster with 4GB more VRAM for the same money. The real star tomorrow will be the 9070 XT though.

Yep, this is possible.

10% faster without RT while being about 20% slower with it seemingly. So it's not all roses for the perf/price there either.

We'll see. I won't be surprised if it'll end up being awfully close to 5070 with RT - at which point the choice would be similar to what it has been between AMD and Nvidia since 2020.

4070 Super had $600 MSRP, this one is $550.
It also comes with new features.
A $50 discount a year later is probably the most boring thing I could have thought of for a new GPU gen. Especially considering 4070 Supers went on sale on occasion.

The new feature (singular) is better motion interpolation. If this is all the post-Moore industry has to offer I can’t see why anyone would be excited about the future of hardware.

In compute, it also doesn't offer many advances:

This isn’t contradictory. The fact that this is the best value card on the market is an indictment of how GPUs have stagnated.

The market is basically unchanged from 6 months ago, just replace the 4070 Super with the near identical 5070. They could have canned the 5070 and just kept making 4070 Supers and the world would basically be the same lol.

I mean if there was a VRAM bump it would still be a fairly boring generation but at least that’s something to talk about!

This discount is virtually non-existent due to lack of stock, which leaves it well above the MSRP.

Yeah that's true but people are going to compare cards based on what's actually available in the market, not against an imaginary better product. It's absolutely a boring release for those of us who chomp at the bit for exciting product launches but I doubt that matters to normal consumers or OEMs. My guess is the 5070 will sell just fine.
