9800X3D releases Nov 7th, review embargo on Nov 6th

You get this inkling feeling that the next set of really good looking games is just coming around the corner. But having said that, I think like consoles, it may be best to wait until they are actually out before I buy the hardware for them.

Right now my setup is enough to follow in step with the current console generation without any real hassle.

3900x/3070 was already more than enough, much more capable than base consoles. Even than the 5Pro, 3900x has more cpu grunt and the 3070 is about a match to the Pro's gpu in raster. Most likely faster ray tracing and better upscaling too. 8gb vram might be too little, perhaps.

But a 5700X3D is a very nice upgrade. Sell the 3070 and use the saved money on what otherwise would be a 9800x3d and invest in a 5080 when that comes out and your system probably matches the next gen of consoles.

Got one and delided already, using the Mycro direct-die waterblock. Noticeable difference in temps :)

Before / After delid, before is with EK CPU waterblock

Runs pretty cool in games

Good stuff! How are you OC'ing it? Simple PBO + 200mhz offset? What's your CO at? Those temps are damn good.

Yeah it's simple PBO +200MHz, played with bunch of different CO offset, ended up with -40 on all but 3 cores which I have at -30. I put LM Extreme on both the CPU and GPU.

Now that I'm back from vacation and can sign for my packages, my 9800X3D, a ROG Strix X870E board, 96GB of DDR5 6400 CL32 (2 x 48GB), and a 990Pro 4TB were all delivered today. I'll start taking the 5950x rig apart later tonight; hopefully my existing case fits this new board ... But I'm a little worried about it.

Gonna move the current 5950X and B550 board over to a new Proxmox 8.4 rig, which will eventually house my TrueNAS box (hardware passthru of my LSi 9208i HBA), one of the Linux folding machines (hardware passthrough of a 4070 Super), my Plex instance, my Home Assistant OVA, our household Minecraft and Space Engineers servers, our local Pihole instance and a few other odds and ends. This will consolidate a 10th gen NUC and a 3rd gen i7-3770S rig into a single box which should cleanup some wiring and reduce power draw a bit. Also everything should perform a lot better!

I'm curious as to why you chose that amount of memory, what will you do with that much?

Geez, that took longer than I thought it would. The new board didn't fit in my old case; not surprising as I'd been stupid and forgotten I've been using MicroATX for years now. Anyway, fancy new case received from my friendly local PC store whom I've been meaning to share some love ($$$) with. I'm new to DDR5, so the first power on cycle seemed like POST was hanging on code 15. According to ASUS, code 15 is actually a pre-memory system check buuuuut can be caused by memory problems. I dorked around with moving my two sticks of RAM back and forth and eliminating one or the other until finally a bit more googling suggested it was memory training taking a moment. And sure enough, after about 60 seconds, the screen came up and the numlock light on the keyboard lit. Bleh.

In my 5950X build, I wanted 64GB of RAM and ended up having to go with four sticks to arrive at that total. It made memory overclocking difficult, or more specifically, getting my FCLK up to a good range with MCLK. With four total sticks, it took forever to get a 1733 FCLK / 3466 MCLK stable. In any case, I wanted to go with just two DIMMs this time, and you're gonna laugh at me, but I didn't want to regress from 64GB to 48GB :D

To keep 64GB, I'd have to go with twin 32GB modules and NONE of the memory ICs in 32GB chips are "good" at overclocking. I could get 6000MT/s at like CL40, or I could go stupid with something like 8000MT/s but with really loose timings -- and I really just wanted to use the 1:1 UCLK / MCLK settings. As it turns out, the QVL on my board provides a single option for 48GB DIMMs with 6400MT/s and CL32, which is just about the best timings I could find regardless of total DIMM capacity. And with a black Friday sale, the 96GB set was about 25% more than a 48GB set, so I bought it.

I haven't even started playing with FCLK yet, but the DIMM pair fired up with DOCP at their rated 6400MT/s CL32-38-38-80. Right now I'm posting here, and then I'll start putting the CPU through its paces at stock speeds. And then I'll start playing :)

edit: I meant UCLK, not FCLK, for the 1:1 with MCLK on this platform. So many CLK's :(

Sorry, you're right -- UCLK is the 1:1 ratio with MCLK, FCLK is still way lower at like 2000 - 2100 depending on luck / silicon lottery.

Should have a 9800x3d arriving this week. Shipment was delayed, but maybe tomorrow. Jumped the gun and purchased early in case the tariff situation gets out of control in the next few years. May buy a 5080, so a new cpu would be a good buy in that case. My motherboard is super old, and probably would have limited the 5080.

Haha, that's pretty fair. I haven't really put mine through any gaming paces yet either.

Not sure how many games I'm really cpu limited anymore. Everything I've been playing lately has been pretty easy to get gpu limited on my 3080. I think my 5800x3d is enough for most games, but that would definitely change if I had a 5080. I'm playing Path of Exile 2 and during regular gameplay I'm gpu limited, but if I go into some of the hub towns I seem to be cpu limited there.

What motherboard did you get?

Hmmm. I Better get that Blackwell before tariffs go up.
