How can display corruption like this happen?

From a post on Reddit, someone had completely messed up colour rendering that was solved by switching from Full Screen to Borderless Windowed. I'm wondering, how can this happen?! What can happen on the graphics pipeline to completely change the colours in a nonsensical way, as if some debug mode is enabled?

There were suggestions earlier of it being a dying GPU, which I can appreciate...but even hen how could it dying produce a game that runs correctly but has messed up colours?

In short, what are the possible means that can cause one random PC to experience this sort of corruption from the rendering pipeline?

I think borderless full screen uses a different presentation model and goes through the windows compositor. Been a while since I looked at this but full screen does not have colour space correction and borderless can. I think … could be some colour space mismatch that borderless is fixing.

But those are some wild visuals. Would have to be like hdr vs sdr, but even then I don’t understand it. Seems like a good time.

You can't blame the computer wanting some psychedelics when all the games are all the same these days 😬

Quick question : If given the choice between fullscreen and borderless fullscreen what should I choose?

Some Windows configuration and/or s/w conflict most likely.

In modern Windows it shouldn't matter, both are highly likely to result in the exact same presentation mode.
There are however some titles where fullscreen would still be preferable.

I used to full screen because it had lower latency but I think they’re now roughly equal unless you’re playing an old game. Using borderless makes it a lot smoother to alt tab.
